Phantom Tuning Poll
Imo the Phantom nerf is fine, but the melee turning speed nerf was not needed.
The visibility nerf and the melee change are a bit much (I count the melee changes as a nerf to Phantom because who uses melee more than Phantom?), so they were a bit heavy with the nerf. He was easy to spot before.
Does Perfectly Nerfed + Unneeded Nerfs = Over Nerfed? Well, I’ll just say yes.
Melee changes were a little much, I understand the turn speed change (Beyblade video explains it all) but the rest was a little worrying
Wrong way to nerf
needed a rework to cloak that promotes intellegent play like how you play a rogue vs hunter in wow. the hunter can see you when you get too close, but you are reletively safe and invivisble from a distance.
Over nerfed. They took every suggestion and did them all at once which was simply dumb. The visibility nerf imparticular killed it. Not like he was hard to see before now he doesn’t even HAVE an ability.
they actually both nerfed in a wrong way and overnerfed him, i don’t think they will achieve a combat invisible class, they should change the entire character at this point since they destroyed it
While I can see the some concerns about phantom, this is the same thing that would happen if you introduced a new merc, let’s say potato, that was just a reskinned merc.
I was stuck between a few choices, but the way that the spinning should have been handled was to have damage falloff as you rotate (maybe have 0 damage by 90 (or less, you could even use some non-linear function) degrees of rotation (so if you were swiping back and forth)).
Most would disagree but the cloak shedding excess damage is not that game breaking. It is really great for keeping people on their toes, it would allow him to easily defeat unattended defences. If Vasil were to shed his shield, he would just have to notify his team that that phantom is out of a cloak. He would be able to take out nearly any lone merc that decided that he would play hero and punish that. Phantom is really effective when there is a lack of teamwork on the other team. What practical difference would there be having him run into the bomb site in terminal and have the cloak take the hit and him just shooting them? This would force people to not just set and forget things and to have to pay attention.
This brings me to the next point of how stealthy his cloak is. Currently he isn’t very sneaky nor tanky. He was already noticeable by people that were paying attention. If you noticed him too late you were SOL. The cloak was a great tool to choose when to engage someone to gain the upper hand. The thing that people probably hate the most is when Phantom shows up unannounced when they thought they were safe. While he can take out most who don’t notice, I have not had much success trying to take out larger groups of people, since you blow your cloak to attack and with anywhere from 1-6 seconds (pre-nerf) in addition to the long time to turn it on before you have the shield back up. If we lost the cloak and made it strictly a shield I think it’d be ok, but both would make you check your corners ( I mean a Rhino in the corner is worse, but people seem to be ok with this).
I had other complaints (some petty), but I forgot how/what I wanted to articulate.
Somethings that I noticed pre-patch that I was able to backpedal faster (than the Phantom after me) with my primary out as Fletcher, I think the only reason for this was that the other Phantoms kept trying to heavy melee but missing (you can’t follow Fletcher around and not explode). Something else is that if people just paid more attention they would not be complaining as much, sometimes it seems that they are not even looking at the objective markers on the HUD or anything.

The way they should have nerfed if anything with is is just make him louder all that armor and reflective gear would make a lot of noise he was fine and was dong his job to make people play as a team if you went loan wolf you were a dead one. It promoted teamwork and made the game better now you can just kill him with half a clip and keep on going.
Worst part is even if you do get past them you can’t hardly do anything to them unless you get lucky and get one of the nice SMG loadouts.
He didn’t need the visibility nerf, or the audio cue nerf, and we didn’t need that freaking turn speed thing.
You already nerfed the window of time where an attack registers with the Katana, that’s all you really needed.
I dont think the real issue is whether they are under- or over- nerfing phantom, but that his design is completely asinine. He still has the same issues as back when he was in closed beta. Being only good at killing lone targets and having no recon utility.
he currently plays more like an assault than the recon class he’s supposed to be, but assault classes are supposed to clear out large groups of enemies especially if they have a tight defense with things like several medics, a rhino and fire supports. However the last place a phantom wants to be is near a large group of people so he doesnt even fulfill the assault role well, and he obviously lacks any recon utility to add to his team. Hell, even vassili the sniper has a heartbeat sensor to spot people through walls.
I honestly think instead of being this tanky berserker they’re still trying to make him phantom needs to be focused towards being a sneaky flanker and either providing some kind of info on the enemy or directly sabotaging them or even a small combination of the two.
I say he has been overnerfed…He was not balanced, but he surely was not as OP as people claim. He was broken!
Pre nerf: he was easy to see, easy to hear. If you don’t pay attention, yes you are fucked.
He was easy to counter (just run backwards while gunning), or by vasili with his sensors… Or shotguns which don’t have enough spread on range imo.
The main thing that neeed fixing was the stab damage, especially the timer.
He was an assassin/linebreaker.
Tried playing 2 games with him today… Well fuck it, never gonna spend money on a merc anymore here. I knew he would get fixed, but this is just a plain nerfhammer. Every aspect of his strength has been nerfed, instead of just a few fixes. He had the exact playing style i like. I got bored of Proxy because that was the only merc i liked before phantom. So I finally had a reason to play the game again, well I guess I will wait a few more patches.
Phantom was a pubstomper. He was rarely used in comp. for a reason…
Next time people complain about OP, first FIX SHIT THAT IS BROKEN. And then make it a free merc so people see that proper players will give the merc a solid hard time.
Sidenote: Keep in mind Phantom was supposed to be a CQC merc, good lucking tracking a merc in CQC if you can’t even properly turn in melee.

phantom was initially a melee and stealth class when he started out, but even in closed beta they saw trying to balance a pure melee class in this game would be to frustrating. So they are moving away from the melee, but it doesnt seem they are emphasizing his stealth and recon aspects like they should be. Plus the low hp mercs didnt need a counter, plenty of stuff just outright murders them as is.
So far I am happy with the nerf, as are most people I talk to in game. You still see Phantoms in game but it’s no longer 4 Phantoms. Those who could play well with him before still do. It’s those who were getting lazy and easy kills with no effort and can’t do that anymore who are crying.
