Phantom: Melee range too short?

(Someordinaryguy) #21

So that explains why I can slash people standing a little bit further, while the stab requires to be right next to them.
After some minor hitbox fixes, range buff and this katana will finally be useful

@MissMurder This needs fixing ASAP, pretty pleaaaaaaaaaaaaseeeeeeeeeee

I’m fairly certain it’s not a bug and was a conscious choice. The cricket bat works the same way. You can hit somebody from further away with a light attack compared to the heavy attack. I’d wager the Katana’s range on both is the same or just slightly further than the cricket bat is right now.

Personally, I’d like it if the lunge actually, you know, made him lunge.

I feel like that’d solve a lot of problems with the whole turn speed thing, since it’d make since to have it if the power attack propels you forward.

@Amerika Then it’s not a lunge… a lunge is where a person steps forward and pushes a sword as far out as possible…a slash attack is where you’re just standing and waving the sword…

Where is it called a lunge? It’s simply referred to as a, “more dangerous but harder to use alternative melee weapon” in the role-call video. Did I miss something?

The secondary attack has it’s own properties that seem very similar to how the cricket bat works. You swing the cricket bat straight out and down but it’s attack length, I believe, is shorter than the lighter left click attack. My point is that the mechanics are similar and it was most likely done this way to keep melee feeling consistent between the similar weapons. Left click gives you a bit more range but a lighter/faster attack and right click is harder to use and doesn’t quite have the same range despite the animations of both looking to reach the same area.

@Amerika Well I mean, think logically. When a person points a sword with straight arms sticking out, does it have a shorter range than when you’re waving a sword with bent arms?

(Amerika) #27

The same can be said about the cricket bat and it’s downward swing. But it doesn’t work that way and that’s because it was most likely a conscious choice in mechanics to make it harder to use and not just the default attack.

I might be wrong and it might be a bug but based on how other similar weapons work and analyzing game balance it makes sense to me that this was most likely a conscious choice regardless of how the animation looks.

(Grave_Knight) #28

From what I understand, and you really should make this thread about the weapon and not the merc, is that the katana’s secondary attack is wonky. The range is less than that of the primary attack even though slashing has less reach than thrusting. It might get fixed in the future but I think right now it’s as intended (which is weird because it’s the slowest attack in the game).

(sentimentalDime) #29

@Grave_Knight I don’t really see it being a problem with the Katana, as this is a much a problem for his signature weapon as it is for the Stilletto or Combat Knife

(Grave_Knight) #30

And yet I never hear anyone complain about it with the Stilletto or Combat Knife. If you’re using either of those weapons you need to forget about stealth once you’re in melee range and get as close as possible as fast as possible and hack away at their life bar.

(sentimentalDime) #31

@Grave_Knight look, is it really that important to move it to Weapon Discussions? The mods already moved this thread once and im sure that if they found Weapon Discussions more fitting they would have put it there.

He has a KEK.

Increase melee range? No. Please no.

(Amerika) #33

Eh, it probably should be in weapon discussions but since Phantom is the only merc right now with the Katana it’s fine.

I’m pretty sure they mean an increase in the mere centimeters, not something as drastic as an increase in meters.
