Perfectionism and mapping

(Osirin Ra) #1

Is being overly perfectionist a bad thing? Every small detail must be perfect for it to pass my almost ritualistic “inspection”

Its actually preventing me from releasing my map because its never “good enough” I have one beta tester and hes not much help poking fun at every nuance and minute detail most players wont see in a firefight.

HOW CAN I BEAT this monster??

hit him with a rock and distribute the map before he awakens! fast!

wil la boot work?

its not just him its my own obsessive compulsivness that stops me from releasing it. I wanan release something people will PLAY not just say “oh thats pretty” while looking at screenshots of it.

I have always mucked around in map editors and released a few small maps internally in my clans (warmup maps etc) but never anything to the public.

Geuss im just a little overwhelmed :stuck_out_tongue:

How about comparing your efforts to the official maps?
Certainly for consistency / detail levels.

Do NOT compare your efforts to custom maps - either you’ll release something looking like a dog’s dinner, or you’ll get a huge ego

Finally, don’t hold off because of those final niggles - you’ll NEVER catch all the little glitches in your map, and some players enjoy hunting for mistakes anyway so it gives 'em something to do

I always compare to official maps, real life, and photo references… is strive for realism but i try to keep it balanced with playability though. I have completely scrapped at least 2 versions of my map because it looked like crap. Im not by far one of the mapping communites “elite” but i know whats crap and whats not…too bad i seem to make crap more than not

Also ill take that advice to heart… i geuss errors and glitches wil happen… ill just fix the ones that GLARE AT ME LIKE DEATH ITSELF, and try and fix the small ones when its possible…

Remember, the perfect plan, issued as the troops roll out the gate, is worthless

It’s too bad when perfectionism gets in the way of the deliver of what would other be a well-playing, solid deliverable (map, skin, sound pack, or mod)

Osirin Ra, I feel your pain! I have dealt with the perfectionism bug myself (over the course of my mapping days) and it can really suck at times. When I first started mapping, I would have to have everything perfect. I would place a brush, and then check it to make sure it didnt overlap anything, and then check it again. Only to start working at a different area, but being held up cause i kept thinking about the area I had done before and if I did it right! -So Id go back and check the orginal brushes AGAIN!

But, that kinda thought process eventually found its way outta my system for I really tried to “conquer” that problem. Nowadays, I can map and not even check myself… Simply cause I can trust what I’m doing. But occasionally, even now, there are times when I find myself checking over and over again certain areas to see if they are right.

My only advice, would be to concentrate and focus “in the moment”. This will help prevent your mind from wondering and getting lost in ure work. Also I have noticed that mapping at a faster rate that what would seem “ordinary” can also help you zero-in.

Hopes this helps?

Perfectionism is good as long as you realize you wont have it perfect before you release/give the map to 10-20 beta testers which have a server 2 test it on and you probly wont have it 100% perfect after several beta`s but atleast 90% perfect.

Even the original maps arent perfect, but trying to make it perfect didnt harm anyone (or maybe a little  )

I think if you are the kind of person prepared to accept your own work is crap and scrap it rather than release rubbish unto the ET community, you are probably NOT the kind of person who has to worry overly about your work being crap
