Pens are finnicky mechanical contraptions that can fall into disuse if a single part is removed. They can dry out and the majority of them are permanent, leaving no room for mistake.

Pencils, however fragile, are simple rods of graphite suspended within a rigid casing made from almost any solid substance. They do not fall prey to mechanical errors and their effects are not permanent by default, but if need be, a fixative can be applied to the markings in order to make aforementioned markings permanent.
