PC Specs

(Andyman99999) #1

My pc is outdated.
Processor: AMD Athlon II x4 640 @ 3 GHz
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 650 2 GBs GDDR5
System Memory: 8 GBs of DDR3 @ 1600 MHz (800 MHz both sides)
HDD: 1 TB 5400 RPM.

I can’t order anything online to my apartment because it would probably get stolen (almost guarenteed). This is why I have to get one premade and sent to Walmart.com. These are the specs:

iBUYPOWER Thermal Take Chaser A21 + 12x Blu-ray Reader
iBUYPOWER Intel i7 - 4790k Haswell Quad-Core Processor
Worthless Graphics card (not stating it because I want a gtx 970 in time.) They don’t have the option to buy it with the PC.
16 GBs DDR3 Rip Jaws (2 X 8 gb) + 1 TB Hard Drive.
Windows 8.1 64 bit (Obviously).
350 Watt power supply (I can switch this out for my 500 Watt power supply that’s overkill for my pc atm).

Not sure if we can post outside links here so I’ll describe where I got it from. Walmart dot com and if you paste this: iBuyPower ‘Build Your Own’ Gaming Desktop Bundle - Select Case, Processor, Memory, Hard Drive, and more
you should see the options you get to choose from. I should also note that there is an arrow that you can click on to search more

Hm.
Just a little thought: 8GB RAM should be enough for a good gaming-and allround-PC.
If you render 3D-models and videos, etc. often per day, then a high RAM is good, but for gaming, etc. 8GB are enough.
If you want to top it out, 3x 4GB RAM are better, yes. But 16GB are a bit overkill, from my point of view (but I only game casually and render videos from time 2 time just4 fun)

When choosing a GTX970-model, I’d go with the GTX970 Strix by Asus.
Because when setting up a PC, I tend to look at the total powerconsumption of the PC.
And you already are running with a 350W.
The Asus Strix has only 1x 8-pin (I think), and not 2x 6, like many others or something like that. So all in all, it drains less power.
Also the Asus Strix “disables” the GPU-fans, when the GPU is not needed, which saves power again.
Like when you are on the Desktop, browsing the intra-webs or watching videos, your GPU is not used heavily. So the two fans stop rotating and will only activate when the Temp crosses 50-65°C (but I think you can set a threshold with a software, so the GPU-fans will already kick in at 40°C or so).

But that’s just my 2 cents.

For the Case I recommend a ZalmanZ9 Plus. The “plus” has 4 pre-installed blue-LED-vans on the front, back, top and side + a front-panel where you can set the speed of the 4 fans.
And somehow in my country, the Z9Plus costs 7€ less than the default case Z9 xD

Well, I have a little laptop of '13 with an integrated graphicscard Radeon HD 4000. Processor is dualcore with 1,8GHz and I have 4 GB memory. Still, I hope DB runs with these specs

@irishroy I should mention that I’m in the midst of building (damn near already built pc). What I mean to say it’s already built and working (using it now), but I still need to upgrade a few components. I’m using a really crappy 650 Watt Power supply (40 usd). My new Specs are:
Processor: Intel i7 4790k @ 4 GHz
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 650 2 GBs GDDR5
System Memory: 16 GBs of DDR3 @ 1333 MHz (667MHz both sides)
HDD: 4 TB 5400 RPM ~ 7200 RPM Drive
Sorry I don’t recall the specifics on my hard drive (Yes I boot from it thanks to UEFI). Technically I don’t boot to the 4 tb, but to the windows partition on the drive. I recall finding out that the manufacturers don’t say what the speed of the drive is but I do know that it was built for streaming videos (writing to the hdd). It was made for surveillance. I do realize that it can write at 70-110 MB/second. I believe it’s a western digital drive.

I still need to upgrade the power supply to a much better one (preferably 800 ~ 850 Watts or more), then I need to buy a graphics card (gtx 970 probably). I am well aware of the slower 512 MBs of memory on this card, I just don’t care that much.

Get the GTX 760, it’s relatively cheap and it works amazingly for pretty much everything.

(irishrOy) #7

@Andyman99999 I think a 500-600W PSU is enough. When it comes to PSUs, don’t spend the entire €/$ on the Watts, but also take a look on the safety and efficieny of it.

I actually don’t use any mousepad and haven’t for many years. Surfaces seem to be just fine for catching the laser(although my last desk the coating on top wore away from constantly use of the mouse).

(Andyman99999) #15

I have an evga gtx 970 ssc (super superclocked), and I bought a power supply that was rated gold from evga that was 1k watts. Now all I need to do is upgrade to a 4k monitor, buy a solid state drive for my os and a few programs, and a mouse and keyboard, and I’ll really be set.

I’m assuming when you say “665 MHz” (rounded down), you mean on one side, since it’s double data rate aka ddr (assuming ddr3, since that’s what that cpu uses), they advertise it as 1333 MHz, because it looks like a bigger number.

You know if you’re motherboard supports UEFI you can get that whole 4 tbs without having to have another partition. You have to change it in the UEFI settings. I believe you would also have to reinstall Windows but I could be incorrect there.

I still consider it to be a quad core because I’m using an i7 4790k @ 4 GHz and I know it’s 2 threads per core. Mine just allows for overclocking by default.
