PC players care to comment?
Initially I was kind of turned off, but the more I played and got used to the movement and shooting, the more I liked it. Granted, it has bugs/issues like any game, but based on previous games Splash Damage has released, I fully expect them to be fixed in a reasonable amount of time.
I played ET competitively for years and am as skeptical as most serious ET guys. Those searching for “ET with updated graphics” are not going to be happy with it because Brink is it’s own game. Also, pure Call of Duty players need to completely change their play-styles/mind sets and adapt.
Remember to unlock the console by adding " +com_allowconsole 1" to the end of your brink target line (without the quotes), as well as your fps and adjust your fov + some other tweaks. I am sure there will be many more to come as we learn more about the game.
Judging by people’s reasons for not liking it, I get the feeling most of the people complaining 1) can’t run it well 2) are getting pewped on 3) refuse to adjust their typical (CoD) mindset and play-style and actually learn how to play the game. I have played all of Splash Damage’s games and it was a little overwhelming at first. I can understand how someone new to the “series” could be turned off.
First hour of playing = 2 out of 5
After 5-6 hours of playing I enjoy it more and more and would have to give it a 3.5 or 4 out of 5 and am really enjoying playing it, but there is room for improvement, of course.
I pre-loaded on Steam and started playing after it was unlocked at 9pm until about 2am when I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore
At first I couldn’t connect to a server but restarting Steam and allowing Brink through the firewall fixed that up just fine.
The first time I saw crosshairs and started moving around I wanted to cheer! the framerate is good and gameplay is fluid on my machine (AMD 4400+ Dual 2.3gHz, 3GB RAM, nVidia 9600GT, 1024x768) using medium settings.
The guns feel great, I was mowing down noobs (we all are right now!) in their heads right off the bat. I like the SMART system, it feels like trickjumps are built into the game and encouraged instead of just being a glitchy ledge here and there or missing wall that the devs didn’t notice in the map.
I used to play a metric tonne of W:ET back in the day and was pretty set on giving Splash Damage some cash for Brink after skipping ET:QW. I do miss the familiar Wolfenstein characters, but I have a feeling that after a few more days/weeks with the maps I’ll be able to concentrate less on finding my way around and more on what the strategies are.
I tried playing through the missions in order at first but after waiting too long to find a server after selecting the 2nd map I just went over to the server list and chose a nice ping game with 14 people in it and didn’t look back.
I find some of the reviews very entertaining, I totally knew what to expect from this game and it has exceeded my expectations. People harping about the low number of maps are crazy, what kind of multiplayer games do they play?? Did they just play de_dust once through and decide they’d had the full experience? No. They played de_dust a million times because it is a fun map. Once people on the pubs start getting the hang of the maps and objectives the games will require more skill and different tactics.
Anyway, I had a blast playing it for almost 5 hours straight and I only expect it to get better as the months pass.
See you on the pubs,
mukmuk
I am an old Q3F and ET:QW player, and, (disclaimer) a huuuge fan of all the games id and splash damage have done in the past. So, now that you understand I may be somewhat biased, here is the short and dirty:
I played for about 3 hours last night and found the game quite fun. Brink is a breath of fresh air for this old FPS player, whereas the run-of-the-mill ‘reality’ shooters have never been my forte. The “arcadey” style shooters are always more exciting for me (Quake, Doom, TF2, etc), versus the single headshot, kdr, no-teamplay-wingeing found in ‘other’ games. I recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the ET series and/or TF games, or whomever is up for a new game with great mechanics (or for those who are tired of the reality games and just want to have some good team-style fun.
The game runs incredibly smooth on my system, and I predict many more hours/days/weeks of enjoyment out of it. (Sure, there are some minor bugs in some instances, but I’m confident they will be ironed out)
Sys Specs:
MSI H55 Mobo
Intel i3-540
nVidia 570 GTX
8 GB Performance memory
On-board Audio
32" LG LCD
I am LOVING the game.
Have the PC version.
Only negatives are a few bugs and the horrid server browser, everything else I enjoy.
This is a breath of fresh air imo in the stale online fps genre.
After solving the initial crash of the game (steam version here) wich for me was related to the language pack (i had to download the stand-alone english language pack since it was corrupted…) i’m enjoying quite a bit the game. Untill now only single player. My config is i7-920xm (clocked@3.3 Ghz across the 4 cores, gotta love throttlestop :D), dual 5870m (CF) 8gb ddr3, ocz 180gb ssd (Alienware m17x-R2).
First game that i brought from splashdamage. Good job.
I’m loving Brink thus far. Only thing I can gripe about is games where there isn’t any/much teamwork
but when it’s there, the game is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun.
As I said before: I think Brink is awesome. I had high expectations and SD managed to actually surpass them altogether. I’m truely enjoying it, even if I haven’t touched the MP yet (US-IP via VPN equals ugly pings
). Can’t wait for Friday to actually play against humans. But the bots are really, really good (playing on Normal thus far).
Having a great time, I really like it. haven’t ut in many hours yet so there’s still a lot I haven’t figured out, vbut tonight was better for me after fixing my FoV.
