PC Co-op. Did it ever get fixed?

(Oliverjl1) #1

Hi Guys,

I preordered along with one of my best friends and I was ridiculously excited to play it. Unfortunately, Splash really messed up the CO-OP of the game, in the sense that people could not connect to your game after an invitation had been sent.
A lot of people made posts about unblocking ports and what not on a router, but, I remember my attitude towards that being “Why should I have to do that? Why could the game not have been tested properly to ensure this didn’t happen?”.

Anyway, We never went back to the game… and it has sat Idle since around May time. We are pretty bored with the games we have at hand now and would really like to play the CO OP, and my question is… has this been fixed since? We haven’t been online together today and I figured i’d ask here, before re-installing, to see if it had been.

Thanks

Oliver

So I bought this car and tried to put something in the boot but it wouldn’t open. I remember people saying something about unlocking the boot to open it, but, I remember my attitude towards that being “Why should I have to do that? Why could the car not have been tested properly to ensure this didn’t happen?”.

You do know why routers block ports and how this affects communications right? I’m guessing not. If the reason you couldn’t play was due to router blocking (I don’t know if it was, but if it was…) then there is nothing the game can do to make it easier for you to host. Well… maybe they could have put in some router hacking virus? But short of that, nothing.

It’s like saying you invited your friend into your home but he couldn’t get inside. Someone said something about opening a door but you think the house should have been properly tested first.

Ofc it’s quite possible that it had nothing to do with ports since the release was buggy as all hell. Guess we’ll never know…

Wow dude… Nice context. Absolutely incorrect though.
How come co-op for other games through Steam works perfectly but this one doesn’t? Are you seriously going to sit there and act like they couldn’t have made the game like ALL those others? I know they could have and so do you.

With the assistance of a third party server it is possible to connect two hosts that are behind NATed routers without having to manually open ports; however brink is not primarily a co-op game and I’m fairly certain that you will never see support for this in brink. Most shooters do not support this unless they are primarily co-op games or don’t support dedicated servers.

However, there are probably dozens of servers that are totally empty, you and your friend could just connect to one of those and play together (it’s not like the single player is any different from the multiplayer).

You could also use a program like hamachi to connect over a vpn.

#firstworldproblems

Open the ports and play or leave them closed and come to a forum and bitch and moan about it… I know which one I’d choose.

You’ll notice that I restricted my comments to the ports. My comments are perfectly valid when it comes to ports.

I honestly don’t even know how to respond to that. In case you didn’t notice, this is an internet forum for discussing a video game; ffs, what did you expect? How many threads on this board wouldn’t be considered a “first world problem”?

I’m not sure why this thread required such negative responses. Yes, the OP suggested, somewhat negatively, that Brink is broken; Yes, Splash Damage could have implemented co-op hosting without requiring you to forward ports on your router; Yes, most of us, including me, agree that the problem the OP describes is not a problem and doesn’t need fixed; but the OP is hardly unique in suggesting that Brink has problems, nor is it unusual for people to disagree on what consitutes a problem. It’s not like the OP posted a major rant against Brink.

Whatever though, he has his answer now.

Well they didn’t, and there’s a way around to get it working, but instead of doing the simple thing that’s required to play it he decides to bitch and moan about it. OMG, I HAVE TO OPEN A PORT?! THE HUMANITY OF IT ALL!! Broken suggests it’s doing something that it’s not meant to, do we know if this is by design? If so, then it’s not broken.

Technology being hard is not a virtue. A thing should work out of the box with no fuss. Now not everything can live up to this standard but opening ports is still something average users don’t know and shouldn’t have to put up with.

also lol brink got out sold by fukken eye divine cybermancy on the day of hte daily deal

(DarkangelUK) #10

Opening ports for software and hardware is still very common place today, and it’s not unusual to have to do so to get things to work.

Just like to point out that I have never ever touched any ports on my router and everything so far I tried has worked for me, so I don’t really agree DAUK.

(DarkangelUK) #12

Are we all going by closed bubble thinking that since you haven’t had to do it then no one has?

Now shoosh kthx!

(Senethro) #14

uhhhhh yeah, right back atcha?

I’ve done it but its a pain in the ass. I also haven’t had to do it in the past 4 years. Just as an example, Payday: The Heist worked with no port adjustment (with me acting as host).

(DarkangelUK) #15

I’m perfectly aware of upnp enabled software and manual port opening, guess others are just spoiled and self entitled?

(Senethro) #16

Yeah its spoiled and self-entitled to expect features standard in a somewhat competing market - consoles.

(DarkangelUK) #17

Explain the requirements that meet ‘standard’ on a PC please. In fact explain standard in general, that means OS, software, hardware, router, ISP, firewall, hubs, NAT/no-NAT… quick… go!

(Senethro) #18

Nope because thats looking at it ass-backwards. What should actually happen is that the user should click Setup Game for the first time and within 2 minutes later has successfully loaded a mission having invited his friends to a lobby via Steam.

Thats the experience I get in Payday, L4D2, Rage and thats just things I’ve played in the past month.

The user’s ease of use is the standard.

That’s what I was trying to say

That’s the experience you get with steam and steam alone, it still has everything to do with hardware and software that’s being used. Should Brink have worked this way via Steam? Yes more than likely. Is that how all games and software work? No, not even close. As I said, closed bubble of ignorance. Steam even has a support article for opening ports for their service because not all setups work well with upnp or have it at all.

For all we know Brinks P2P coop works perfectly well in Brink and it’s his router, Windows firewall, software fiirewall that’s blocking it. It happens a lot, and that’s why there’s a metric ****ton of guides on the net for opening ports. Have you tried it? Has he tried other P2P coop games and they work?
