Paying money for the Obsidian, Good or Bad?

(CCP115) #1

Last time they gave away the Phoenix obsidian, I was mad that they decided to do it in such a roundabout way, asking for money from those who couldn’t grind. I was mostly confused though, I had no idea what Obsidian cards were meant to be. Initially I thought they were loyalty rewards, showing your dedication to the game. But now? $15 USD just to get a card? I’ve lost all hope, now they’re just another rare skin.

But enough about me, what do you guys think? Is it good they finally removed RNG from paid items? Is it bad they decided to make the paid item a rare limited edition thing? Is it way to fucking expensive?

I am aware these poll options suck, maybe suggest better ones if you can.

Good, expensive, and a step in a right direction would’ve been my answer. This pack in particular is just on the steep side since it comes with Aimee. I’ve just always thought the mercs aren’t worth 10$, and I’d leave Aimee out of the deal if I could, but I don’t mind, I like the idea of it regardless

For people who have money and enjoy LE stuff like me, this seems like a great deal. However, I feel like obsidian cards should be free, but have requirements to obtain. Getting cards for free or simply being able to buy LE cards makes them feel not as special.

Furthermore, if what I believe is correct, this obsidian should have a different model than the normal obsidian recolor. If this is correct, then it indeed is worth the 15$ tbh, since people have been whining about different models for ages, and the only cards with different models required people to have a poopton of money to throw in the first place.

Regarding the price, keep in mind that you are getting Aimee in addition to the obsidian. Given that Aimee will be $10 normally, I don’t think the price is really unreasonable at all.

Like @Rjsto said, it’s an okay price for what it is but I question why mercs are worth 10 USD, if every merc was 30k credits or 5 USD each and the case/Aimee combination was 10 I would’ve minded less.

(neverplayseriou) #6

It’s a step in the good direction but only if they make the obsidian 5 dollars (I have no interest in aimee and if I wanted her I would buy her with credits, this just seems to be a way to grab another 10 bucks) and if it’s or 1 set loadout for the culprit or 1 of the best of 3 loadouts for the culprit (maybe chosen by the community?).

(Rewolf) #7

Its a step in the right direction. People can now finally pay for more cosmetics and less RNG. Given the fact that Aimee is included in this deal makes the price about right as well imo. 15usd for only an Obsidian would be too much, but 5-7 usd is a nice price. If I had the money to spare I would get it as well!

(neverplayseriou) #8

@Rewolf for me aimee being in it is the exact problem, they’re forcing people to spend 15 instead of 5 dollars with the excuse of someone also getting a merc.

Most players that are willing to spend the money on this will most likely have enough credits to unlock aimee, 5 dollars for the obsidian would be more than enough now it’s just a money grab.

Im totally getting that shit, *I never buy Elite cases cause im limited on money and i aint playing casino with loadout. But having something better to spend my money on is good.

(MarsRover) #10

Considering how easy getting 50k credits is, I absolutely do not consider mercs being worth 10$.

5$ for a skin - OK, I can dig that. But 15$ for a skin with 10$ merc tax doesn’t look great at all.

Edit:
I also do not agree that “they finally removed RNG from paid items”. You don’t know what merc will get the skin. You can guess a few that certainly won’t, but there’s still quite a few candidates. You also do not know the loadout. Fletcher wins and you are hoping for that sweet BL32? “We want to promote other, less popular loadouts. Enjoy your A62!”

it could be a new rarity, but keep the obsidians the way they are, which is a reward for players that play for a long time

(kaMMakaZZi9) #12

Not worth it. Every merc can be easily gotten with credits. Still wouldn’t pay $5 if it was just the case.

(Jostabeere) #13

Probably necessary, but the amount is ridiculous, sorry.

(kaMMakaZZi9) #14

I plan to just get Aimee, the culprit case and hopefully some trinkets. If I have any extra I’ll buy equipment cases and test my luck.

(FireWorks) #15

Hmmm personally I got a problem with buying Aimee, or any merc. Id happily pay the 15$ for all the event fuzz, but it kicks my gamer honor to buy a merc… in the balls… hard… with a military boot…

I spend a lot of time with the game, I got a job, I dont see why SD shouldnt keep theirs. And I also enjoy that other people can play with me even if they dont got the chance or will to spend some cash. Thats fine with me.
Ill happily keep spending money for this game at the moment.

Obsidians were never a reward for playing a long time.

The founders obsidians were purely paid for items. The stress testing weekend obsidians were given to players who played at least 1 game on one of two weekends in march 2015. The phoenix obsidian was given to ANYBODY who owned phoenix already.

Getting an obsidian is more about timing, not about playtime. This obsidian follows the same pattern as the rest of them and it has nothing to do with loyalty or experience in game. The only reason it may feel like a reward for people who play for a long time is because those players you see with them stuck around and kept playing. Plenty of people with those obsidians have also stopped playing.

Anyways, as far as the event goes, I would like to see a better way to get that obsidian to players who purchase Aimee with credits, but I understand what they are doing and why. However I think it would make more sense to simply reward people who own Aimee at the end of the event with the obsidian rather than sell it like they are.

(FalC_16) #17

I’d toss money on my screen, no problem. But 15 bucks seems a bit too much for 1 card. I say 1 card, because I can buy whatever merc anytime for gold.

(pumpkinmeerkat) #18

Five dollars for a unique skin seems fair to me. Would be nice if we could get event elite cases instead of Aimee if we were to purchase her with credits but the extra 50K credits NOT spent on Aimee could be useful during the event. No way to be sure just yet.

(jollyRacer) #19

This will make devoted players of the game who wants to support the devs, have a way to do so. Which in turn, helps the game to develop and remain Free to play for the general public.

Best of both worlds right here.

If it really bothers you get a job or save up, Splash has to make profit somehow since they made this game free to play.
