I am discussing whether an assumed Russian in the game should have a Russian accent, not bickering over it. There is a huge difference, perhaps you should learn it. You need to relax and stop being so antagonistic. First over a name and now just attempting to start an argument. Gonna block you for a little while.

I think you’re confused as to what race actually is and I don’t see how language or dialect fits into the conversation. A dialect is much different from an accent. A dialect is a local form of a language whereas an accent is different pronunciation.
I think you’re mistaken on what my position is. Why would it be bad to be a Russian from Russia? I’ve never said anything even close to that. Nor did I say anything about expectations, but realistically yes I would think it is normal to expect a Russian looking guy, with a Russian name to have a Russian accent. But I did not say that. I said it is racism to say a Russian HAS to have a Russian accent. Is it the biggest crime to think that? No. It is latent racism rearing its ugly head.

I’m also german, but I think the TF2 medic is very funny. Eff off PC, that’s what I want: "
My position has nothing to do with political correctness in the manner you seem to think. Russians with Russian accents in video games is perfectly fine and I never said otherwise. My position is that a Russian doesn’t NEED to have a Russian accent. People who think a Russian NEEDS to have a Russian accent are expressing a form of racism. PC has little to do with this.
You are right, the above isn’t directly tied to accents, as dialects and accents are quite different things. However, I just wanted to point out, that accents aren’t related to a specific race, since there are many more languages and dialects(wich also affect an accent in a foreign language) then races out there, hence it CAN’T be racism to expect someone to have a certain accent. That’s what I wanted to express.
Example: you could instantly distinguish if someone is a swiss guy, a german guy, or an austrian guy, when you hear them speak English. Yet you’d most certainly say, that Austrians, Germans and Swiss people are basically of the same race. All three basically speak GermanB; that’s where the dialect adds another level to an accent. You can not only tell the speakers mother language, but his region as well. But races are usually bigger than a certain region; in the specific case of Russia it may actually be the other way around, but that’s quite an exception.
In most cases a race consist of a couple countries in a certain area wich all have different languages and dialects; therefore it can’t be racism when you’d expect someone from the Netherlands to have a netherlandish accent, since the “Race” he belongs to also speaks German, Belgien, France(Belgiens also speak France), Danish, and a couple other languages.
And you said, I got the term races wrong, but in fact, the term is not ultimately defined anyways and therefore scientists even abandoned the idea of different Races entirely; not necessarilly, because they don’t exist, but because the term is just not defined well enough.
BThe Southern-Germany(Bavaria) dialect is very similar to the Austrian dialect, but I can, nevertheless, tell after a half sentence if someone is from Austria, even if he’s really trying to speak standard German; there’s just this 1% difference in the pronunciation that will stuck with you, no matter how hard you try.
PS: I can’t tell you how many times I was approached by a do-gooder kind of guy, when I was standing in front of a sign, or a map, or something and he would start talking to me in English; in my own country! Should I blame him? I don’t think so, and I never did. Since even I’m surprised when I hear a pitch black guy speak crystal clear German next to me. What I want to say; you just have your expectations, even though reality proofs them wrong on a daily basis. But playing with expectations in the media can be fun(again, when you make it decent and respectful). You can play straight into expectations, or completely turn them upside down: wich also would be “racism”, cause the developer obviously expects certain expectations from you. The Demo-Man from TF2 for example; they could’ve let him talk in this african warlord kinda way, but they chose to completely turn around your expectations in that regard. Is that passive racism? Implying that you would expect something and then turning it upside down? Or would it be politically more correct, to imply, that even black guys can be something awesome like a scotts-man?
Vassili speaks with a British accent? Is everyone expected to speak with a British accent if they live in GB? Why is only the perfectly integrated Russian represented in the game and not people who might be struggling?
That whole discussion can be turned around as well.
(as someone has pointed out, it seems like Vassili is just a nickname and the real name is in fact English, but the whole discussion started before that was known to most of us)
His final character name is probably not going to be Vassili but it’s what we had to go with at the time
Vassili is a perfectly fine nickname for a sniper, whatever his ethnic origin, since “Ennemy at the Gates” made it a fairly well known name after all. Now on the other hand, if someone would be a candidate for a Russian accent, it would be miss Zamowski aka The Eye
