BTW it is kinda racist saying the russian must/should have a russian accent. Last I checked accents are not tied to heritage.

That’s not even close to what racism is. It’s closer to stereotyping which is not always a bad thing. The character has a Russian name, looks Russian, and for many other reasons should speak with a Russian accent.

I’m Russian and I wish I had the accent haha, but yea it’s normal for the kid born in the other country to take on the local accent.

If you think Russians should speak with a Russian accent, that is in fact racism because you’re generalizing that real Russians speak with a Russian accent or you’re saying that you’re not fully Russian if you don’t speak with a Russian accent… What you said in the underlined is racist.

BTW stereotyping about race is in fact racism. Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race. <- stolen from google definition; it is correct.

Well, in the real world maybe, especially when you dig lame a$$ political correctness, wich I absolutely don’t btw., then maybe. But a game like XT lives from clear characterisation. I’m black, but I loved how Mokoena talked and his african features were accented/exaggerated, as well as the ones from the caucasians and the asians. I’m also german, but I think the TF2 medic is very funny. Why can’t we all enjoy the variety of people and appreciate it, and when the time is right even make fun of it, as long as it’s not outright disrespectful, or stupid, or intended to hurt someone?

Race and nationality are two very different things. There are fewer races, than countries and languages. I don’t know how many different african races there are, but there are far more languages and even more dialects. Pretending that’s not the case is outright ridiculous. And why on earth would it be racism if I’d expect a russian looking guy, with a russian name to have a russian accent? Is it really so bad to be russian from Russia? It’s not like they equipped him with a vodka-flamethrower.

Tbh, I think Vassili is not intended to be Russian at all - his name in-game is Alan Lewis, obviously English?

It is just his nickname that sounds Russian (also confused me in the beginning), which is probably since they couldn’t come up with anything better at the early stage. Is imho rather a gimmick than a background personal story-based nickname. The nickname tho probably still refers to Vasily Zaytsev sniper from WW2 for unknown reason.

Dunno, maybe i’m wrong. But judging how unknown and probably underdeveloped the backstory is for the game at the moment (at least what is shared to alpha members), I doubt there was any personal backstory for Vassili.

I am discussing whether an assumed Russian in the game should have a Russian accent, not bickering over it. There is a huge difference, perhaps you should learn it. You need to relax and stop being so antagonistic. First over a name and now just attempting to start an argument. Gonna block you for a little while.

I think you’re confused as to what race actually is and I don’t see how language or dialect fits into the conversation. A dialect is much different from an accent. A dialect is a local form of a language whereas an accent is different pronunciation.

I think you’re mistaken on what my position is. Why would it be bad to be a Russian from Russia? I’ve never said anything even close to that. Nor did I say anything about expectations, but realistically yes I would think it is normal to expect a Russian looking guy, with a Russian name to have a Russian accent. But I did not say that. I said it is racism to say a Russian HAS to have a Russian accent. Is it the biggest crime to think that? No. It is latent racism rearing its ugly head.

My position has nothing to do with political correctness in the manner you seem to think. Russians with Russian accents in video games is perfectly fine and I never said otherwise. My position is that a Russian doesn’t NEED to have a Russian accent. People who think a Russian NEEDS to have a Russian accent are expressing a form of racism. PC has little to do with this.

It’s a stereotype, not a form of racism. I’d like to see a number of accents and nationalities represented. Just be sure not to do an aussie one like they did in Dead Island, just plain awful
