Password-Protection for PK3 files?

(LaggingTom) #1

Is it possible?

I’ve used winzip to make pk3 files in the past with no problems, but I was curious if it was possible to encrypt using it.

I’ve tried the encryption options and I’ve added a password to encrypt my .zip and then changed it into a pk3 file. ET can’t read this. It was quite a dissappointment.

So, I ask, can I password protect my pk3 files and still have them read-friendly in ET, but not out of it? Can I do this in Winzip? If not, can I do it with a different program and where would I find this program?

Thanks in advance!

Nope, you can’t. Not sure I understand why you would like to but FYI there are lots of tools circulating that cracks the winzip password.

I was curious if I was able to do it. There’s no other why :\

(jaybird) #4

This isn’t possible. How could a program unzip a file when it doesn’t know the password itself? The only way to set this up is to have access to the engine code and set up such a system there.

Clearly, ET should include one of those zip password cracking programs lanz mentioned

just a though here, would we actualy be breakign the agreemet to modding software if we do this

i though everything we make can be snaped up by the devs if they want and if we start encrypting stuff would make it harder

(jaybird) #7

Thing is (obviously) we don’t have access to the engine code, so tough luck on this one.

isn’t it possible to put the files in the in the dlls we create? it makes the dlls a lot bigger but protects the files…

(LaggingTom) #9

I suppose that would depend on the type of modification.

If it was just, say, a menu modification then I would say it wasn’t possible, because ET needs the actual .menu file.

(KillerWhale) #10

Well not really, you can hardcode menu files if you want. Same for other scripts that are red by the game/cgame/ui code, but not for the engine (like shader files, though on 2.60 you can even hardcode these).

Nope, you can’t. Not sure I understand why you would like to but FYI there are lots of tools circulating that cracks the winzip password.

just a note: yeah if the zippassword is less than 7 letters …or else it takes AGES to crack… and if it contains !"#!¤%&/()=/casesensitive and stuff… even longer

so if you want to protect a winzip file with buildin encryption i would suggest a password somewhat like: mY#L337#p4$$w0rd

Hmm , better to let players to mod mods …
Best example is Traumahawk , who was modding TCE and made great stuff , he is now in dev team…
