Overly Long Fragmovie 2

(sneak) #1

If you didn’t see the first one you can find it here.

This movie was actually made very quickly. I started it early in the morning and spent about 5 hours on it then took a nap and spent about 3 more hours on it. Originally, I intended to make a sniper movie separate from all my movies but decided I didn’t like Vassili/MoA as much as I thought so I decided to merge the sniper footage with the regular stuff.

I decided this time to really focus on more variety in the footage as well as work on the volume levels. I found out my previous video had a bit “low volume” for the average listener. With my high-end audio setup meant for enjoying loud music I have alot more control over volume levels so I overlooked the fact that most users would hear the video very low volume.

I also experimented further with effects and tried to add some more “for fun” scenes to the video instead of having it only be frags this time. I spent more time figuring out syncing some scenes to audio too. Finally, I let the game audio run freely for most of the video instead of silencing it like before.

Any criticism is welcome, enjoy.

Okay.

  • i really hate the second song. it just doesnt fit. same with the second song. it doesnt fit.
  • nice collaterals in the beginning.
  • the effect at 3:14 seems too random.
  • whats with the text at 6:02?
  • some clips are too long/ you couldve cut out the first 15 seconds of the clip of 8:30, and you could shave off a few seconds from the end of the clip at 6:55,
  • i really dislike colorgrading 2 and the overal game graphics of the game. it looks really boring, and plain ugly. do you really need to have the graphics this low that everything seems blurry?
  • adding effects to the clips might be nice, if you are using sony vegas/movie studio you should use unsharp mask. i use it as the base of my effects. first unsharp mask, and after that i add whatever effect i feel like using. play around with the sliders untill it looks good and use it on every clip.
  • the clip at 7:25 should be removed.
  • at 7:45 you get only one arty kill. the 4k that you get before it was enough, so you didnt have to add that single kill. (assuming theyre the same clip, but cut to save time between kills)

Nice clips, but it was not enjoyable to watch because of the combination of clip length, music, and graphics. and like the title says its overly long :stuck_out_tongue:

however, im treating this a lot like a montage, and not like a frag movie. (tbh i think theres little difference between the 2 but whatever)

I can’t quote your post because you left an unfinished emoticon in it somewhere so the forum is forcing me to enter one and I can’t type anything even after entering one.

  • You said that you hate the second song and the second song, clarification please because that doesn’t make sense. That sucks as well because everyone told me they like those songs O_O.
  • Thanks. I wonder why Euros call these “collaterals”. That doesn’t really make sense based on the definition of collateral. It would be more fitting to use this word to describe a situation in which 2 players kill eachother with bullets.
  • The effect at 3:14 was because of the tracking with the scope. It was better than normal at that distance of moving the scope around. It’s a bit harder to notice with the effect. It was also intentionally aligned with the music. Effects are usually my downfall though. I never know where to put them and I’m always afraid to overdo it so I barely put anything in. Also don’t know much about adding stuff like that.
  • The text at 6:02 is a reference because the song used is from one of my favorite videos. The thing on the Fragger’s face is the tag of the team featured in the video. During that video there was a zoom in on a player who (while doing a trick jump) put out a single bullet on an enemy across the map. It’s a video from another game. That’s also the reason the screen went black and white to signify being “old”. It’s an easter egg for players from that game who saw that video (especially since DB is so alike).
  • I put in that much in the PDP Aimee clip because I wanted to show the hopping to the location because it looks a little funny. That’s one of the things I was talking about where it’s not just all about frags.
  • Yea the 6:55 clip was left like that because of what my teammate said on TS but I failed to make it audible enough. Oops :/. Here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEu8h4Teeec
  • Some blurryness is due to compression of YouTube. I can record and render in much higher bitrate but YouTube basically makes the video the same for anything above 10,000,000 bps. The settings are low in-game for gameplay advantage and I really find colorgrading 0 to be fatiguing and annoying. I think alot of players set this to “2”. Anyways, what you mention is the main reason why I wish we could have some kind of demo system. I’d never lose any footage because ShadowPlay was off or something and I could run the game in higher settings then record. I’ve been thinking lately of running the game a bit higher detail (just enough to not ruin my advantage big time) for video making since I have less interest in playing competitive now just to make the videos look better.
  • Thanks, I’ll try to remember messing with Unsharp Mask later. I’m using Vegas Pro 13 64-bit. I use some of the Sony VideoFX and a thing called MagicBullet currently. For chat blurs I copy the video event and put it above the one I copied on another video track and select Pan/Crop then make a mask over the chat area then add Sony Pixelate with the values 0.350 for horizontal and vertical blur. You could of-course use key frames to time it only during the portion of the video that needs it but I find that these values are hardly noticable (you’d have to be looking for it) when there’s no chat in the bottom at all.
  • I figured people may notice the phoenix clip. That’s another one of those clips that was added as a small “haha” thing. It’s a bunch of players on TS together basically who were sitting there at that corner for pretty much the entire game and we had 2 or 3 Phoenixs there healing, shooting and reviving. I didn’t want to show all that because I thought it would be too boring and since we were all contributing to frags and I don’t have videos of them (plus that would be confusing) I wasn’t able to grab them all and it didn’t look cool enough to show frags.
  • Yes the Arty clip was all one, but I think the part you may have missed is that after the Arty kill that was still the same life shortly after (check the spawntimer after the Arty kill… it was 00:01). It WAS to cut time out that I cut between the different scenes. But yeah may not have been a great choice afterall.

Thanks for the bullet points like I left you :>.

Everyone who I sent it to on Steam liked it and had no problem with the length, graphics quality, music or clip length. I had 1 or 2 people who apparently didn’t watch it because they thought it was a “sniper video” so maybe those people thought it was too long and didn’t say anything. I’ve decided instead of making a ton of little videos and spamming forums and stuff with all those videos I’d rather just make one big video now and then, fuck the norms lol \m/.

I actually hate when people use the word montage for these. I think they’re trying to make it sound more important than it is with the word Montage because it sounds French or something.

  • I have no idea why i say collateral. only thing i can think of why people say collateral is that instead of getting 1 kill with 1 bullet, you get collateral (extra) damage by getting an extra kill with the same bullet. how do you NA guys call them?
  • you dislike the name montage, i dislike the name fragmovie. probaly seen to many bad fragmovies with people just showing every kill they got in a match, instead of special ones. i say montage because everybody else does, idgaf about the sound or meaning. its just a word :pensive:
  • and yea. i like using the emote but that means that i have to finish the sentence, then get back it it and press ente:pensive:
  • i dislike the music because its not my taste. the rap song doesnt have any ups or downs, its sounds the same from beginning to end, and the voice is annoying to me. the second song is okay-ish, but it doesnt feel right in this fragmovie.
  • i use Sony vegas pro 13
  • i think the blurryness has to do with your game settings and not your render setting. if you compare what you see to my montage, your game has even more downgraded settings than me. compare the gun and merc skins. i have everything on low (the graphics preset, i was to lazy to set every option to low myself) so there shouldnt be that big of a difference. im guessing you edited some stuff in an autoexec or something, to make those changes.

  • i suggest doing what i do, and put Haha moments after credits, unless theyre after an epic frag, like that elevator molotov.
  • for effects you can stick to the things that make the gameplay prettier, like unsharp mask, and secondary color correction. they dont ruin the gameplay with overediting, and still add a little but of makeup to make the gameplay prettier. (yes i love unsharp mask)

I think the issue I have with it is that when you think of the word “collateral” the word “extra” doesn’t come to mind at all, even if it’s technically an additional adjective definition of the word. Collateral typically means for example you want to rent a car so you get charged a hold on your credit card just incase you wreck the car so they can process that hold as an actual payment. Collateral is when you do an EVGA cross-ship RMA and they hold a payment on your card until they receive the one you sent in after sending the replacement out first.

In NA I don’t think we really have a term or phrase to describe that. This is the only shooter I’ve ever played (besides a little bit of time in CS, and not being involved in any way with CS community) where you can kill 2 players with 1 sniper bullet.

To me, and most of NA AFAIK, “montage” and “fragmovie” are interchangeable but I just prefer “fragmovie” because of the reason I stated before.

The song you’re referring to is what most people would call a “classic”. It’s by Beastie Boys. Maybe you’re too young or different-tasted to enjoy it. I don’t really know how old you are but most people I meet online don’t have a clue who they are.

You did it AGAIN. You said you dislike the rap song for whatever reasons then you said “the second song … too”. That makes no sense. The second song IS the rap song. Maybe you should consider naming the songs.

Here they are in chronological order:

  • Falling in Reverse - Chemical Prisoner
  • Beastie Boys - Sure Shot
  • Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Beat the Devil’s Tattoo
  • Die Antwoord - Baby’s On Fire (Instrumental Remake by Ahmed Monster)

The newer Vegas software seemed real buggy. Seems to crash alot, that’s why I went to 13. A friend Aciz also recommended this version as stable and for the most part it is.

I’m aware that it’s not all about compression. I did state in my reply that I’m considering increasing my in-game settings since I’m leaning less towards competitive play and more towards just making movies.

I did edit things in the config as well as adding things in autoexec to achieve these settings.

The config is here if interested.

Did you put some kind of lighting filter over that video or change the colors of the green in the obituary? It looks like the greens are brighter.

add me on steam? http://steamcommunity.com/id/etsnotdead/

im 19, but well aware of classic 70s/80s/90s artists. i know the beastie boys, but never listened to them. only thing that comes to mind from beastie boys is the reference in futurama during the robot hell song.

sorry, i meant to say third song:
Beastie boys: the rap song doesnt have any ups or downs, its sounds the same from beginning to end, and the voice is annoying to me.
the Third song (Black rebel motorcycle club) is okay-ish, but it doesnt feel right in this fragmovie. thats probaly because its not my taste.

i have sony vegas 13 pro because i have a black eye patch and sail a ship through the seven sea’s.

ill let you decide what settings to set higher and whatnot to improve graphics.

ill check when i get home, but i only used unsharp mask, and secondary color correction, and then played around with the sliders until it looked good. i have a set unsharp mask template for DB, that i use for every clip, and i made a secondary color correction template for every map. ill post screenshots when i get home.

i knew i missed an option. i used three effects. unsharp mask, secondary color correction, and soft contrast

I was also unsure about that third song actually. My concern was that it didn’t have the same flow as the first 2 songs. I ended up just leaving it there and taking a chance.

You could have an eyepatch and still have later versions of Vegas, but I don’t recommend that :P. I’m also an eyepatch wearer.

Here are the settings I chose yesterday to try to play with:

When I got my card RMA’d I was happy to know I could now be allowed to record 1440p 60fps videos but I figured out that YouTube disabled the ability to play back at that rate. I’ll likely release my next movie in 1080p 60fps because of this.

EDIT: something in this game causes bad FPS drops now that I’ve reverted the game to it’s def ault texture settings and turned the settings up but I’m not sure yet what it is.
