Other community Leaders from (COD, BF3, CS, etc.)

(Evil-Doer) #1

Been talking with some folks, we want to see this test from your (Splash Damage) perspective an what your big picture is. What is gonna help you out number/business wise.

That brings us to a very valid idea that is going to help you long term tremendously. You have your packs an what not for alpha invites, but what if we bring in to the testing; community leaders from the variety of other billion dollar industry games. It’s early yet an if we test with a plethora of ideas an feelings from the beginning, it will help along the way in a smoother process.

The community we have at hand now is mainly “your” community per say. We know what we like an what we want. Respectively what if you get a hand full of more invites out to community leaders in other games whether it be competitive players or just personalities from the games. If we have ideas an thoughts posted on the forum from people that are “expecting” something else or what might make up the “major” majority outside our community we can have a different look, understanding, an constructive talks. That could help with trying to mesh that past an the present an what makes it all work in the end.

Hats off to you guys, this challenge is huge an is a tremendous project to take on. The challenge is grabbing everyone from everywhere an creating a community that lasts for decades. That by no means is easy.

So what about getting some private invites to people outside this niche an wondering to the worlds of COD, BF3, CS, an such.

Sorry but the last thing I want influencing this game is CoD or BF :frowning:

(Evil-Doer) #3

There in lies the issue that we need to work on. We know as a community what we want. But, in all fairness we NEED to get “OPINIONS” from everywhere for this to work so we all can enjoy a longevity of this game for years to come.

(Valdez) #4

Violator that is your opinion about how you want the game to be. Look at in terms of a business decision from Splash Damage. They are trying to obviously get as many people as possible to play this game. So how are they going to make their game appeal the most to the masses?? Or do you think keeping it old school (rtcw/et/etqw) can bring in more players?

Right now it seems to me they are trying to appeal to the old school (mostly) but also capture some of the new fps players. Is this a good business decision?? who should their target audience be?

(Apoc) #5

Learn from their marketing team, but unless you want a game like cod, you dont need codadvice.

(Evil-Doer) #6

I get absolutely what your saying. Was it the marketing that enticed so much that people played an it just catapulted or the game play itself ?

(INF3RN0) #7

People would be surprised to find that some people actually like to play multiple genres of games. In fact I invited a well-known player from COD/CS/F2P and he really enjoyed DB. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if people from other games appreciated the ET formula for what it was. I know I like other non-ET games myself, and I surely don’t go into a game like CS and tell everyone it should be more like ET.

Cods so successful as it has the ability for casual gamers to have fun and get kills. It has grenades that blur vision and stop movement, really quick kills, 1 shot kill shotguns, 1 shot kill snipers (even footshots). Stuff that means that even if you are aweful, there are enough things in the game you can use to gimp other better players that you can still get kills.
It also has internal marketing, where the demo system allows people to efficiently make their own vids promoting the game.
It also has a level system that has a visual reward (prestige icons), that forces a player to play the game for 400 hours + if they wish to impress their friends by getting the top rank. Customisable tags, guns, etcetc, aswell as excellent marketing as a “Lads game”, in a similar league to FIFA, instead of the nerdy classification many pc shooters get, that keep them away from the big bucks mainstream cround trying to have fun but stay cool.

What Apoc said :). I’m not CoD / BF bashing here, its just they are not objective-based shooters. I believe the market is already flooded with CoD style games and IMHO I would not like to see DB get thrown into this group, and from various comments by the SD team I don’t believe they want to either. Of course no harm in inviting and converting some CoD players to the cause ;). I started online gaming with Q2 DM (also played CS:S for a bit and enjoyed that) and got converted to objective-based play by W:ET.

So would be good to invite some players from other genres, as long as it doesn’t end up turning DB into said genres :).

(Rex) #10

This is a very bad idea. Why on earth should we need them, if they play a completely different “shooter genre”? Ohh please…

(rookie1) #11

Would be very delicate to do so.
Could be good from the ones that have open minds
Could be bad if too Fanatics about their games
idk if i was SD would one invites the ones I really know from other games That can analyse other things than their usual Best games
(and maybe they all ready did…and we dont know)

HAHAHA! That was good

You guys are severely wrong about players from other games. Just because you lived in an etqw bubble doesn’t actually mean you know what other people like lol. I’ve tested all sorts of games myself having played a variety of different FPS styles and do have my own preference towards what I find more favorable. I am able to easily recognize the design goals of different games though, and give my best feedback under that understanding. There’s plenty of people from CS/COD/BF/etc that would offer just as good of input in this game if they don’t have a one-track mind.

(Valdez) #15

I agree with inferno, I have played many fps games like q1/duke3d/quake2/quake3/rtcw/ut2k3/cs-go/bf3/cod blops2. I have quite a few friends from each game that could provide valuable input. If you want to open it up to more alpha testers let me know, I would love to get some of their opinions.

(Kiddspooky) #16

Best game ever W:ET, COD input = nil.

I think SD is original, and needs to create the market, not bow to it. Watering a game down so that it completely loses everything it is supposed to be would hurt imo.

I have played almost every COD game, its not a team game… no matter how hard some of them might say it can be.

More people = good, but know your audience… and COD peeps aren’t going to stop playing COD…

Agree with OP and some of the immediately preceding posters.

If I were Splash Damage, I would definitely not be looking to cave in to a general demand for Enemy Territory 2: Pro, complete with laser-like (low in recoil, spread, damage, and overall user/hit feedback or aesthetic feeling and satisfaction) weapons, overpowered medics, quake engine style movement glitches/quirks and so on.

A consequence of being free-to-play in a saturated market is that there is little or no upfront investment and if the satisfaction of the game is weighted too much on having already learned and mastered the gameplay (such as in previous titles) and not, say, satisfying weapon/shooting aesthetics then anyone not already invested in that gameplay will have a lot of trouble gaining traction and quickly bounce off the game.

I’m not saying that Splash Damage should ignore their old playerbase but that SD should recognize that that playerbase develops a set perspective in the same way that developers can become entrenched in a set perspective and overlook rough aspects of their creation that may dramatically stick out to others.

Brilliant post here kiddspooky, I agree with everything said, well except that rtcw was the best game ever made not et.

I never played QUAKE or ET competitively. I played it as a pub game and that’s just because I was younger, but I definitely enjoyed playing them. I’ve been in the competitive scene for quite some time now for games such as CS/COD. Competitive players from cod are starting to go to CTF/DOM which are MUCH more fast paced and are like DB. Most teams that take the cs/cod competitive scene seriously and put effort into their team would honestly give some great feed back. I know people are looking for something to get their “fire” back for competitive PC. Asking top teams from other games is not a bad idea, it’s just picking the right teams. Competitive players will adapt and want to play a solid competitive game with a solid and promising foundation, such as a good community which support each other.

(Seanza) #20

I don’t like this suggestion, sorry.

We have all played a Battlefield and a Call of Duty, we’re perfectly qualified to give those perspectives, imo.
