This is actually already possible, though a little hidden.

Open the console (likely either ´ or ~) and type this into it:

hudtoggle chat

You can unhide it by using the same command.

Yes, need a mute option for sure. Sick of people spamming chat entire game as if they don’t get enough attention at home or something!!

hudturnoff chat also works wonders.
