Opinions on Brink

All I want to know is what platform you play on and if you think Brink is a brilliant game, a terrible game or a game which needs improvement.

I’m on the PS3, I think Brink is a brilliant game because I prefer it to CoD as it is more team based and I love the art and weapons. As a side note I also played a couple of good games with a few people on the PS3 tonight was fantastic and if anyone here wants to add me on PS3 just tell me your id and i’ll hit you up for some games

Xbox 360:

Brink is a good enough game with its fair share of flaws and shortcomings, that had/has potential to be one of the greatest class-based, team objective shooters of our time.

I love it. Needs improvements to gunplay (needs a higher skill ceiling), and needs a match browser for consoles if it wants a community larger than 30 people. And hopefully the netvar tweaks will keep coming and eventually make the game offensively biased in stopwatch.

This.

I gotta feeling that after I make it through this Xmas rush of all the AAA titles, I will be still playing Brink for a long time.

SD is obviously interested in keeping Brink fun and balanced for the people who enjoy the game. I like that a lot. Looking forward to their further refinements, enhancements, and of course, new DLC levels.

PC player. I think it’s a good game with tons of potential.

  • Great art style
  • Revolves around teamwork
  • Character customization
  • SMART system
  • Can be great fun when things go according to plan
  • NO SDK
  • Extremely low player counts, especially at off-peak hours
  • Campaign mode is terrible. All games end with humans spawn camping against the bots or the humans doing all the objectives in a few minutes with ease
  • Bots in competitive game modes, sometimes ending in 8 humans vs 1 human + bots, this is not balanced gameplay
  • Lots of games end in spawn camping
  • Some weapons need some tweaking
  • No team colors, hard to distinguish between the two teams at times

For the most part I think the game is great but could do with some minor tweaking (CC map spawn camping comes to mind) but other than that Brink is exactly what i expected.

PC player.

I think Brink is a decent and somewhat innovative FPS; certainly not “the worst game of the year” as many people make it out to be, just not AAA quality. While I can tolerate the not-very-fleshed-out story, I think the biggest thing going against the game right now is simply not having enough maps, even after the DLC. I find myself constantly running through the same maps, and thus find it hard to play this game for long periods of time. Other things to note:

  • = pro / - = con / ~ = neutral

+the unlockable abilities, especially those included in the DLC are unique, fun and interesting. (e.g. lazarus grenade, control turret, UAV, etc.)

+the operative, while less useful to the team than the other classes, can be a blast to play as.

+despite recommending a core i5 and a GTX 460 graphics card, the game runs (surprisingly) fine on my 3.00GHz intel dual-core cpu and 9800GT graphics card

~s.m.a.r.t., while somewhat innovative, isn’t hardly used on some levels, although future DLC maps featuring s.m.a.r.t. shortcuts could help this.

~no container city night maps: again, solvable with DLC

~the bots are decent, allowing some fun to be had when servers are empty

-balance: SMGs are rather overpowered, shotguns are (literally) hit and miss, and there are very few reasons to play as a heavy.

-While fun, Brink is not a AAA game, and IMO is not worth the AAA price of $50 ($30 would be more reasonable). Additional money to fund Brink development can be made through DLC.

I do think Brink has some potential left in it though, certainly if SD releases more DLC with new interesting abilities and especially new maps.

Loving the opinions, still no PS3 players, and I know the PS3 community isn’t dead :frowning:

Very fun console game, slap in the face of every pc player.

(Ojama666) #10

Why so ? I’ve played the pc version and to me it seems the same ?

(Ghostdog) #11

PC.

Overall love the game and find it refreshingly different from the standard ‘military shooter’ format. Particularly like the overall style and feel of the game, the imaginative environments and of course the customisation aspect. Also greatly appreciate the ability to play/practice offline which is great when you don’t always have access to broadband (eg when staying away from home).

One negative that springs to mind is the fact that the timed mission format possibly discourages new players from taking the time to explore the maps and instead encourages lemming rushes into chokepoints. Also suspect that the balancing between body types may still need some work.

Personally have had no major technical issues (and I play on a laptop), but can appreciate that those with certain ATI-based systems may have a completely different experience.

^ This is where I am at too. Brink is one of the better games I’ve played in a long time. I’m on 360.

PC:

Played 24 hours worth, but don’t think it’s been loaded up since the end of May. Okay-ish game but too many issues preventing it to be elevated to good/great.

PS3:

Platinum trophy earned and DLC downloaded, got the two trophies for playing each new map in Campaign. Good on PS3 but issues that need resolved. Want to earn the remaining DLC trophies then I think I’m officially done with it.

(Verticae) #14

Exactly the problem, thank you.

(Oschino1907) #15

We are busy playing the game, if you want to find us just look at the Brink Hardcore Club or join the chats.

(BomBaKlaK) #16

So you’re saying that instead of being patient you’re going to complete it 100 percent then quit basically ?

(Thundermuffin) #18

PC player and find the game to be a slap in the face like tok said.

The game restricts movement more than it lets you move. The gunfights are uninteresting and are rarely dynamic (hold grenade, run into room, let grenade fly, shoot grenade, hit person lying on the ground to kill). I also have to have my hand held because I guess I’m too stupid to throw my teammates syringes and medpacks and instead have to hit F to let the game do it for me.

It just isn’t a good game when you compare it to W:ET/ET:QW or any other big shooter. The one positive is it made me go to Counter-Strike and at least it doesn’t hold your hand. If you’re good, it’s because you’re good and not because you hit the F key the most.

(H0RSE) #19

I don’t think the game restricts movement more than it lets you move. It simply opens up movement in other directions and does away with “oldschool” tactics, like strafe jumping. Basically, it’s all semantics and not worth arguing about.

(Thundermuffin) #20

Actually it is worth arguing about. So what if the animation is prettier when I mantle onto those boxes and climb up that wall? I could do it faster and have more control if I could strafejump onto them.

There are so many places where I could jump over the holes in structures (think of CCity near the crane, one could easily strafejump over that dip instead of having to go over the little walkway), or just get over objects that require a lengthy SMART animation.

You’re kidding yourself if you think this game doesn’t restrict movement; strafejumping > SMART in pretty much every situation. There’s very little that SMART would do better than just straight up strafejumping.

I can’t think of one situation when I played QUAKE the other day where I went “man I wish I could wall jump up there,” but every time I played BRINK all I could think was “wow I could have strafe jumped over there by now instead of having to use this crappy SMART system.”
