Operative - Tips and builds

(Aedus) #1

[Copied from my thread on SPUF]

I’m going to be switching out to playing operative after the massive amounts of every other class and a clear lack of Operatives. So how is your operative set-up?

Heavy with a minigun and a rifle?
Medium with a silenced shotgun and an SMG?
Light with an SMG and a pistol?

What do you feel the best set-up for an operative is, include guns/attachments if possible. Also any tactics you have picked up that you feel are beneficial to know.

Cheers. :stroggbanana:

In my experience the operative’s best tool is VOIP. If you’ve got an operative with excellent map awareness, comm hacking, disguise and marking allows him to move freely and communicate the enemy positions to the rest of the team.

Combat wise- you’re often presented with a whole group of enemies with their backs turned to you, alone. I’ve seen the minigun tear people up. If you don’t want to be heavy, open up with a fully cooked grenade, follow with caltrops, then kill people one at a time, using the slide tackle to keep moving so they don’t all open up on you.

I have to agree with Incognito. I spend my time taking over consoles, firewalling them, getting behind enemy lines and spotting enemies with the red outlines, and hacking turrets [this is a hell of a surprise for most people].

I treat my character like a true operative. Rather than trying to run and gun, mowing down anyone I see, I’ll slip behind the lines and take over everything. Then perhaps drop a frag and unload a clip before disappearing through a nice smart climb up to the next level. It’s a satisfying feeling only dying a couple times per map.

I usually only get to the top of the score list by being a solder/medic and just sitting and shooting people. That gets old. I sure wish there were more stats - perhaps a little table of different team related objectives - to display who is the real team player and who isn’t.

Awesome tips guys.

Are shotguns viable for operatives or should you stick with other guns really? I was thinking of using the medium body with the silenced shotgun and the galatic, but I’m not sure how well it’ll work, light bodytype just for harrasment purposes would be pretty fun I think, but may die too quick if you don’t grab buffs before you head off.

Nice tips, seems the operative is alot of fun. Once players work out how the class works, we’ll see more of them.

If you take Hack Turret, can you then use Control Turret on it ?

(DemiGod) #7

Yes - in fact I think you can only control after you’ve hacked it. Best part is, you can control the turret from anywhere. Just apply the control box and then take off into a corner or behind the confines of your front line and fire away. It usually doesn’t last too long but it’s good while it lasts - especially when the enemy team plants the turret and then stands right in front of it… classic.

Best moment I’ve had so far was getting killed just as I finished hacking a turret, and the person who killed me ran infront of the freshly hacked turret and got mowed down.

Another tip I’ve found as an OP, when you disguise yourself, run backwards towards the enemy as if you are retreating. It reduced their awareness by at least 50% when I began doing this.

Love the reverse running strategy. In terms of scoreboard whoring, I’ve seen ops getting top kills plenty of times. Also, taking disguise and comm hacking gets you a ton of XP- if you can do that after most kills, you’ll have medic level XP at the end of the match- I’ve easily gotten into the 7-8K range against AI.

i was thinking about fun things to do with the operative for almost the whole weekend, it seems it is the most useless class when not having an obejctive to hack but i will give it a try later, was about to sacrifce a level to reskill anyway^^

(seathry) #12

The reverse run strategy works amazingly. The only time it backfired was when the other player, a user, noticed I was disguised as him and mowed me down in a group of four. Cortex bomb worked nicely. Haha.

(jazevec) #13

Does it mean you can use Control Turret while incapacitated ? Or even once you respawn ?

Another tip I’ve found as an OP, when you disguise yourself, run backwards towards the enemy as if you are retreating. It reduced their awareness by at least 50% when I began doing this.

This is fairly obvious to an experienced player. More generally, pretend you’re a member of the enemy team (except for shooting your actual friends). Don’t run in the wrong direction. Go where a member of your disguised class would like to go.
Many players are easy to spot when disguised, because they still behave like enemies. They spend a lot of time having you in their crosshairs. So avoid eye contact :-). Don’t look at your “teammates” when “enemies” are around, act threatened.
Effective disguise needs a change in thinking.

Heh! Nice, how about taking remote over friendly turret and mowing down the entire enemy team with it before they even realize? An enemy operative did that to a team of mine once.

(Crimsoneer) #15

I’m finding the operative awesome for stealing command points - combine that with firewall, and you can really slow an advance down by firewalling all the terminals they capture.

Also, turret hacking is incredibly satisfying - at reactor, when you’ve got a good chokepoint full of people, hack a turret or two behind them and watch chaos ensue.

PS: does anybody know if you can hack more than one turret at once?

(Mr E Unknown) #16

I tried that this evening - after hacking the second turret, the first turret disappeared/disintegrated. Totally understandable why this is so, but still - shame…

(DemiGod) #17

What is the benefit to having more command posts besides a place to replenish ammo?

Any general or overall benefits/buffs to the team as a whole?

(Crimsoneer) #18

If it’s a health command post, you all get one extra health “pip”. If it’s a supply command post, same for supplies. Can really make a difference when it comes down to it.

(Trypsinogen) #19

What body types are you guys favoring? Nobody’s mentioned best body type for operative yet.

(DemiGod) #20

Light body type. The issue I’m running into is that when you go into disguise, do you take that body type? I have felt like a medium every single time I disguise no matter who I take it from.

I find that this is best body type as the point of an Op is to get from place to place by utilizing the quickest and most efficient route.

What weapons do you guys recommend? Any pistol users?
