Open beta will hit soon : tutorial should maybe change.

With open beta incoming (check that thread for more information : http://forums.dirtybomb.nexon.net/discussion/10836/open-beta-incoming#latest . Thanks @Ardez ), I really feel like we should really change the tutorial. Actually, it’s a pretty well designed, but really lackluster one : it does not explain anything about engineers, assaults and recons (exemples : Proxy, Fragger or Vassili), and it won’t teach you advanced movement. It will only focus on Aura and Skyhammer gameplay, which is a bit sad.

Also, hitting open beta will mean A LOT of Skyhammers/Auras incoming : it’ll really affect the in game merc variety. Some of you may say that it’s not a big deal, but very few choice is left to newbies as they always start with Aura or Skyhammer, and no Engineers available may hurt low level games (which may not give players the feel to come back). I would suggest to let beginners choose two mercs in a list of five (one for each “class” of merc) : not only it’s very newbie friendly in my opinion, but it’ll also assure a bit more variety in the servers when open beta will hit. I’d suggest those five mercs for the “newbie available” list :

  • Aura
  • Proxy
  • Vassili
  • Skyhammer
  • Fragger or Nader… I seriously can’t decide myself. I don’t feel like allowing newbies to pick Fragger is a good idea, but giving Nader makes me feel like the list is not the most intelligent one.

Tell me what you guys think.

I think that they should give the new player a one engineer class, one healing class and one high damage class. You can let them choose what classes but you don’t have to.

thought about it a couple days ago.
I would give new players Aura/Skyhammer/Proxy this covers all support mission critical classes. The other classes mainly bring damage to the table.

This way new players learn from the start the value of support/engineers and objective play.

how the Tutorial should be.

  • Start with skyhammer as normal
  • after the shootingrange have him encounter an EV.
  • Let him throw an Airstrike at it.
  • Let the EV survive with a little bit of health, and Let Skyhammer shoot it with his gun to demonstrate that normal weapons do damage the EV altough just a little
  • Switch over to Proxy and let her repair the EV (point out that only one can repair at the same time and that proxy does it faster)
  • Let Proxy escort the EV a few meters (point out that it only moves when close by)
  • kill her off like you do it now with skyhammer.
  • switch over to Aura and continue as usual.

After the tutorial give Aura / Skyhammer / Proxy for free.

Not sure how it would work but switching Aura / Proxy for another medic / engineer would make more sense both are too similar (fast/shotguns). also they are pretty weak and die fairly quickly. Having sawbones or bushwacker in the mix would propably be a newb friendlier option.

This can also be a solution, though it does not really give some choices to new players. Not sure if we should directly give three mercs from the start by the way : SD have to run its company after all.

Ah my bad didn’t catch on the choosing part. Thats a nice idea too. I think both are possible solutions. I would stand by the tutorial change no matter what ttho since it would work even if you can choose the mercs afterward.

I honestly have no problem with tons of Skyhammers. I’ve already been in plenty of games which were almost all Skyhammers on both sides, and it was perfectly okay. I guess that’s partly because new players don’t really know yet how to make the most of his spam.

New players do get credits very early to be able to afford another merc, and three free mercs in the rotation should also help (I assume the idea is to always have one engineer in the rotation). That said, adding an engineer to the list of permanently free mercs would be nice, but I don’t think it’s super critical.
