One thing is undeniable about Phantom.

(thoroughPistachio) #1

As he currently is implemented, he’s WAY too visible and noisy. He might as well have cans tied to his feet clanking around everywhere he goes.

The hum is actually more alerting than footsteps. It’s such a dumb implementation.

(Reddeadcap) #2

This is true, many people doing threads about Phantom bring up mostly the noise part as simply walking is enough to make him somewhat hard to spot. Carry on.

(CCP115) #3

I don’t know about you guys, but Phantom always catches me off guard. If any other 1 person is shooting a gun at me or someone else, then a Phantom can easily swoop in and do damage.

The visibility is only a problem if you decide to sprint straight towards someone when you don’t have any distractions.

The noise is only a problem in the rare circumstance that you decide to engage while cloaked and there aren’t guns blazing everywhere.

I couldn’t disagree more. Phantom is super easy to see at all times. If you zone out while fighting, you need to re-train your brain on how you focus during gaming. Esp if you can’t shoot and hear the BUZZZZZ at the same time.

(Amerika) #5

If people are hearing the buzz and catching you it’s because you got too close to them. Phanotm is not a melee-only merc. Stay away from people and use the refractive armor (it’s not a cloak) the way it was intended…with intelligence. Use melee when it makes sense. Virtually stabbing somebody with bullets from a flank is better than chasing them only to be heard by everyone nearby and be shot by anybody while you swing a melee weapon that is not a special ability.

(Drac0rion) #6

You can actually hear Phantom about two Aura station ranges away with Big Ears augment.
I found out about it the hard way.

(thoroughPistachio) #7

By your logic, Phantom should never go within shooting distance of the enemy team either.

Too. Loud. Esp with good settings/headset. It’s hilarious. A melee or weapon user with silent footsteps still sneak up on you first (and will).

But that doesn’t exist in this game and it doesn’t exist on purpose. SD took measures to ensure that you couldn’t just run up to anybody and take them out without giving them a chance at responding. The chance to respond is currently the sound Phantom makes while using his refractive armor. So you either have to play smart and play at distances where hearing the armor is much harder/impossible (especially on a loud server) or you, gasp, turn off the armor and run at people to melee them so they can’t hear you. Which is kind of dumb when you can just shoot them.

He’s not a TF2 spy. He’s not supposed to sneak up on people and instantly kill them with a melee weapon. He’s got a Kek10, a Crotzni and a Blishlok for a reason. Using his ability, which is not the Katana, correctly is the key part to playing him successfully. That means you need to be smart in using the armor. Which means you don’t try to run up on people and melee them down unless that’s the only choice you have (out of ammo etc.).

You’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole here which is why you find his special ability lacking. You aren’t using it correctly because you’re trying to melee on a character that melees only slightly better than any other merc in the game.

You’re really not getting it. SD’s ideal is understood, the implementation is a joke. I never said TF2… you’re going all over the place here.

Listen to Amerika here. You obviously don’t know he’s one of the best Phantom players out there… and there aren’t many.

(sentimentalDime) #11

I’m able to consistently hear Phantoms sneaking up on my with Dirty Bomb’s volume turned down, and a podcast in the background cranked all the way up.

That’s hardly sneaky.

Exactly. Ignore the guy who doesn’t get it and his fanboy.

Amerika gets it. When you don’t depend on the cloak to get super close, you can still surpise your enemies. Your guns are your best weapon. People generally won’t strafe if they see no threat, so you can line up your crosshair while cloaked and quickly spray them down with your SMG or revolver. Then use the cloak to absorb damage and to make you a harder target while you run away. Though it’s tempting to charge in with the katana, the greatest success will come from using the Katana when you would normally use a melee weapon, when you are already in extreme close quarters, are out of ammo, finishing, or you snuck up on someone.

Nobody is doing what you described. Another rant onto some made up direction your mind has added.

Correction, Amerika is the best Phantom on YouTube. The rest of us are busy with other things to show it off.
