One thing I really have to suggest (no bs)

(AlphaUT) #1

As the release of new/old map is coming. SD provided pre-view videos. After watching all the pre-view videos, I realize one very important thing, that SD care about the graphics, color of the maps, textures, and all other art designs too much. Considering the small team needs to created a new map, balance it, and new system (CMM if you’ve forgot), it seems to be unnecessary to do art design at the same time. As you guys can see in the pre-view videos, SD made map looks beautiful and stunning, but in my opinion, it is unnecessary while Dirty Bomb this game is still in the stage of needs to creating contents. I believe the focus should be on contents first before any other fashion things.

I would really really suggest SD to forget about art design first, and focus on how to present actual gameplay. Don’t get it wrong. I am not talking about SD should gives us a map with only white or gray color, but SD should pay their attention on art after they’ve successfully produced enough contents.

Also, as the requirement of game isn’t that high, in my opinion, not the majority of the DB players will play with MAX setting. More likely, they seek for high FPS first. Me, I do not play with high setting even with 1060 since some of the things that appear with high setting will actually cause my death.

I disagree, I think having nice looking maps and characters will make more new players want to stay, and I would rather have nicer looking polished maps than more maps.

Yes, nice looking map will attract new players. But lack of contents will lose more. Not to mention the current system is broken. Also, I am not suggesting not to have nice map, but to pay less attention on the art design of the map before produce enough contents. How many months had already passed after Aimee and the latest map released? Dirty Bomb is currently facing lack of contents, which in my opinion part of the main reason is focusing too much on map art design. It is still in (years of ) beta, and with the small team that SD has, it is best to focus on priority.

Well, if anybody here knows Unreal Tournament 2017 they also know that they just used untextured maps, and players played those fine, just later they finished work on those.

People are right, all hype for new maps is long gone after another preview #9001

(Chris Mullins) #5

The features you’re talking about are done by completely different people. Artists do arty things and programmers program all the things. So have no fear, making maps look good does not delay features like CMM.

In beta blockouts should be expected no? For better or worse the current player base wants to test and provide feedback on new content. Not sure how much action the PTS is seeing these days but would be nice if all beta participants could get involved with testing a bit more. Hopefully development of the new map will be faster and involve the community more.

Will Dockyard release when the event ends next week? Would be kinda awkward if it didn’t…

Even if it were causing delay with content. I much rather waiting a bit longer but play on a beautiful map than a white ugly untextured map.
I actually care about looks
And I play on max settings since I got my new PC (a few days ago). I kinda get 180 fps anyways so lowering it won’t give me any fps boost but still, I think that 60 fps on ultra is a lot better than 180 on low (unless you have a 144 Hz monitor, but I doubt someone who struggles getting good fps will bother buying a 144Hz monitor)

(wow such a girly girl, cares about looks too much, no wonder you have D.Va in your profile picture)

imo colors change the way you see entirely

also, dockyard breaks the cqc gameplay and make newbies learn how to shoot at long range.

we might see good sniper generation after this

(AlphaUT) #9

well, guess having a “complete” map done is worth to wait for a year and more while it is still in beta test. If i remember correctly, the first time dockyard test was February 2016, and April 2016 was the latest time that a “re-work” merc Aimee was released. Nice

I like having new maps.
I like having beautiful looking maps too.

The problem with getting both at the same time is there are likely going to be balance changes needed after the map is released. So the time prettying up an area to look good DOES take time away from releasing the map and future balance changes.

Someone could spend days making something look and work a certain way just to have it all scrapped in favor of something different down the line as it is an unbalanced section of the map.

Um… you do realize that’s not exactly what OP was saying, right?

He was just saying that as you guys make maps, put them in block-outs more so we can test them for better or for worse. We need more content, not perfect maps right off the bat. I don’t completely agree that they’re unnecessary, but it being a beta, and content desires are HUGE right now.

they do, blockouts go up on PTS for trial

That’s an interesting insight. Why on earth are you guys getting blockouts when this game is a freaking BETA. Ugh… really… why is the PTS so limited… you know what? Whatever. Also, pretty sure PTS is under an NDA. though you didn’t say any specific maps or changes, so whatever.

(Nail) #14

people had to apply for PTS, it’s limited to stay as a control group and yes, everything else is under NDA

(Press E) #15

I am a bit curious why PTS is such a huge secret. Even if there are a lot of changes in development, it would help the community to have hope and stay longer if they knew better what the devs were working on, or better yet, play it.
Doesn’t mean they’d have to expose literally everything. I’m alright with having surprises and previews like they’re doing with Dockyard, but I don’t think more transparency would hurt.

(DNineD) #16

K6 pointed out to me a very important map design feature that StayFreshShoe mentioned.

flow of offense

(pumpkinmeerkat) #17

The idea of a PTS in a beta is a little funny. However, if it helps SD get better data and they are listening to input from comp players great!

Based on the updates and changes beta players see it doesn’t seem like it’s working though. No significant Thunder changes or burst rifle changes after months of complaints and bans in competitive matches. Not to mention the number of bugs that still make it into updates.

(Nail) #18

PTS is more for map layout, flow, sightlines, those kind of things, merc and weapon balance is done with data from regular servers afaik

(XavienX) #19

This.

But honestly SD should just release all blockout prototype maps and fill in the appearances later to add more content.
