One for all, all for one

(.FROST.) #1

I’ve originally posted the following(with a few changes) in another thread, but since that’s closed now I have no high hopes, that I’ll ever get an answer to it  It was completely off-topic anyways.

"The only problem I have with the new “all can do all” is the repair thing. Not so much from a gameplay POV, but more from a logical/aestehical POV. It’s not too hard to accept, that now all mercs know how to plant a C4 charge, since it appears to be pretty natural for (ex-)military guys, to do stuff like that; but repairing the EV as a Medic is basically like an Engie who’d heal people; it just doesn’t feel right and I kinda don’t want that in the game; it just screams “makeshift-solution” and “looks” ugly. Repairing should be Engie exclusive.B

B[/B]or the Engie could just drop a toolbox* per “life” and whoever picks it up can also repair for a certain amount of time, or till he gets killed.

*(like ammo-packs and medi-packs; possible ability for Engie #4?)"[/B]

So my question is; how would you guys find such a “toolbox drop ability” for repair objectives, instead of the momentary solution? Aside from repair, I have no probs with the “one does it all” for the other objectives; but maybe a “hack-box-drop” from the Covert would also make kinda sense. So what do you think about ability drops, especially concerning the Engie?

Am I right in thinking at in CS you can’t defuse the bomb unless you purchase a defusal kit? Maybe the repair option or ‘toolkit’ could be an optional part of the loadout while sacrificing something else? Never gonna happen but thought I’d throw it out there any way… my grenade key is sitting doing nothing, I could bind it to that

Looking at it from a logical/aestehical POV what’s the difference between having a wrench when you spawn vs getting one from the engineer?

Your 2 points seem to contradict eachother.

Seems interesting if you ask me, it may need some further tweaking but I get your point

I didn’t meant it(aestheticaly) in a purely visual sense and(imo) it already isn’t “right”, that everybody has a wrench in the first place. And the toolkit is more of a visual key, a symbol, that you just got some kind of “makeshift Engie lessons”, you know? The kit is only suppossed to be a symbol, that a real Engie has passed some of his knowledged to you.

Let’s consider a situation, where he is already severly wounded, but before he ultimately dies he can “pass his knowledge” to the guy that gave him cover while he was repairing.Whilst he’s still waiting for the respawn the others can proceed with repairing the EV. BUT they shouldn’t have that ability from the start, but only when a Engie has given it to them.

Matrix style, they are mass cloning bodies. Every respawn you just get a new body and your old memories are loaded into it. Just as the engineer dies he takes out his “engineer upgrade chip” and hands it to you.

(.FROST.) #7

Yeah kind of, but he could even do it if he’s not even wounded; just in advance and to be sure that there’s allways someone around who could do his objective work, when he got killed.

The defusal kit halves the defuse time, but you can still do it without it.

Its a very interesting idea to give an ability.
Some et mods, have adrenaline modified, so that you can only give it to others.
Also you could take the class from a ungibbed but completely dead teammate. (As such et had 3 states. Grounded, dead, gibbed. - whereas DB seems to have only grounded and dead.).

I don’t know about the engi. Basically the question is, should there be an objective which can only be solved by a certain merc/class. Medic and Fops already have a very unique ability.

The longer I played now this everyone can do everything, I start to realize that it will become most probably a big mess. It could be cool for competition, but for pub play - I don’t know… people tend to choose the worst possible options. With 5 classes, there are basically 5 options… its already a lot. Give them lots more of mixed options, and they are really confused…

@ailmaki

Sure, there are many abilities around, but SD will produce further merc sets anyways. And the new sets will also need interesting new abilities. If I understood it correctly, then they are going for (visually)themed sets, maybe the abs can be similar as well; in this case, a whole set of mercs, that has the ability to pass along parts of their class specific abs.
