On the Brink of chang...ing my hardware

(Otto) #1

I didn’t want to make my first post here more rehashing of what we don’t know yet so I thought I might rephrase this a little.
I have been watching very closely to brink for longer then any one i know. I haven’t been this excited about a game since early 2007 when i first heard about Team Fortress 2(and have since logged 1915hrs in it). Its been around 4 years since then, I have only played a little of a couple other games in between. When I first heard about TF2 I knew nothing of TF-classic; on that note, it is very rare I get a this good of feeling about a game I have never played before or have any reference too, but when I do, its even rarer that my instinct lets down. Which for me is a special occasion that I want to be good and ready for, after watching the first trailers released for Brink, I thought for sure I was going to need better equipped Hardware to do the game justice.

I have waited and planned on building a new system as close to the launch day as possible to get the best result. I haven’t upgraded my hardware in a few years now as it has played well in all games i have thrown at it. I am however undecided if this is the most opportune time to upgrade. I have spent the last 2 weeks solid doing research on hardware both available now and closer to Brinks release. I get the feeling that the up coming turn over in technology that will be on the market around the end of the year (Ivybridge/Bulldozer Kepler/SouthernIslands) would be worth waiting for(even if just to drive the price down of current hardware).

The census of Brinks assumed requirements from both here and the steam forums is guessed at doom3(IDTECH4 Engine)+20% give or take.
My current hardware configuration:

OS: Windows 7 32bit
HDD: 750GB WD7501AALS 7200rpm 32MBcatch
Motherboard: Asus P5Q Pro Turbo
CPU: Intel E8500 3.16gz (OC 3.8-4.0)
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC OCZ2RPR10662G (# 1066MHz DDR2 EPP 5-5-5-15)
GPU: Nvidia GTX260 896mb (192 core not 216)

Highest Draw Games I’ve played:
Team Fortress 2 Near full but lowered a bit for server frame drops
Halflife 2 100% max
Fallout 3 95% max
Fallout new vegas 95% max
Global Agenda (Unreal 3 engine) 80% max
Border Lands 100% max

As best of an educated guess that can be made with what little we know about Brink’s architecture, I ask: How well do you think my setup will be able to play Brink?

I appreciate in incite and input
Thank you for you time, and reading my some what long winded post.

Well, if you have kept a watch over Brink longer than anyone else, how can someone else know when you don’t?

My opinion is that the most opportune time to buy pc hardware is the present. New stuff keeps coming and prices keep going down. If you want hardware specifically to play Brink then I guess it would be best if you made the purchase around its release date.

i suggest you w8 for upgrade in autumn .New cpu are coming and also the new gpu from ati and nvidia. With the current rig you got i dont think u ll have a major problem with brink.

(Herandar) #4

Do what I do. Wait six months for new hardware and lower prices. In six months time, decide to wait for six additional months for new hardware and lower prices. Lather, rinse, repeat.

You will save money by never buying a new PC.

(Nail) #5

if you can’t run it well with that rig, everyone is screwed

(Tec) #6

lol +10…

(Ragoo) #7

Dude, I have the same CPU and GPU, don’t scare me lol

If BRINK doesn’t run smoothly with this, I’ll be super mad. I have nearly zero knowledge about hardware tho, so can someone tell me if chances are good that I don’t need to upgrade anything?^^

(Nail) #8

you might need a more comfy chair

The test rigs they were using at EGE were on I7 920’s @ 2.8ghz, 8gb RAM… couldn’t see what the graphics card was (when I sat down to play, it crashed and they had to reboot the machine :D)

(Nail) #10

if you NEED that to play, game is a fail

Same technique has worked for me for about 2 years now. I agree in this course of action…that is if you’re ok with going to the dark side…you know console gaming.

That-being-said…I still play a lot on my 4 year old pc (q6600, 2 x 8800GT in SLI…oh and I got a SaWEET sound card…you know because that makes all the difference). Crysis can run in a mix of medium/high settings…but I keep it at medium across the board to keep my fps high enough to not give me a seizure.

I’ve “built” about 5 rigs on paper over the last few years, but just like you said, I’ve been waiting for prices to drop. Now my $3,000 dollar rig on paper a few years ago would only set me back about $800 now. AWESOME.

Still holding out…

(Tec) #12

Just wait for system requirements.
I believe we’re gonna see them soon.

(Nex) #13

Just get quad core or if you want, i5 or i7…There’s no need for buying whole rig

(Seyu) #14

Is it known that Brink will be utilizing multiple cores?

(amazinglarry) #15

I agree. I honestly can’t think of a legitimate reason why somebody would want anybody else’s thoughts, opinions or speculation… especially about a game they’re excited about.

(tokamak) #16

I think you should at least be able to run ETQW well. Yes it’s graphically lower, but the environments are smaller and less players are present to offset that.

As for the rest it mainly seems to be incredibly efficient use of resources without any polygon spent needlessly (unlike games like Crysis and UT3).

"Is it known that Brink will be utilizing multiple cores? "

yes it will

(hobodefcon) #18

your cpu seems pretty beast, i would say get another vid card and if u still cant run it smooth on max, you could upgrade the rig later.

(Nail) #19

if he needs to upgrade anything, this game will be unplayable for 95% of the PC people it’s targeted for

(hobodefcon) #20

He might be playing in his personal movie theater, those large screen and resolution use alot of juice :stuck_out_tongue:

I think hes going for max everything with minimum frames being 60. The dream…
