Hey there, just fancied making a post thanking SD for making Brink F2P this weekend so I could finally know if all the hate was valid, so if you’re also interested in my worthless opinion please continue reading this internet. Originally this was paragraph based and contained a well thought out argument, but I figured it would get trolled more, so I’ll stick to boolet points.
What I liked:
Incredibly fun gameplay: love all that sliding about jazz
Friendly/helpful community: any questions were quickly taken care of etc.
Beautiful aesthetic: even at 26fps
Great voice actors: many lines are repeated far too frequently though
It’s a splash damage game?
Some other things no one cares about
Bad:
Beyond awful performance: It’s amazing you actually shipped it in this state, 26fps lol
Very little game customization: I don’t care about player customization
No development/ Low skill ceiling
Hud: my brain isn’t capable of processing upward of 45 things at once
Maps: Too large and contain little substance, too much visual clutter
Main menu is unintuitive & has many sub-menus
Weapons have huge spread & all felt similar.
Few stats:
I’ve played 5.5hours straight, mostly medic because its the best
Played all maps, they’re all the same anyway
Meet the minimum requirement, can run other id tech 4 games with 300fps.
I actually got a 10fps boost if I ran the game @max settings but more visual clutter :[
Anything else you’re welcome to ask
tl;dr - I wanted to love this game having followed it for years, but its just a disappointment, but I’m not sure if it’s disappointment with myself or SD. Maybe I’m not being thorough as it is now 6am so my ability to think clearly may be hampered. I do think its possible to bring it back from the Brink though (funny? No) here’s how in my opinion:
-Optimize the game properly for PCs & unlock performance enhancing cvars
-Game Customization
-More condensed maps based on gameplay first and aesthetic second
-Release SDK
Or alternatively continue letting the game die, I wouldn’t buy this even at £8 from Game, but thanks again for letting me try it; I will see if my opinion changes over the weekend. Anyway, back to TF2 for another 4 years
it runs fine for me on both ati 6950 and ati 4870. (and i can get 17 fps on a s**tty laptop, also ati). Some have issues with performance, but vast majority do not.
