Okay Splash Damage. What are the Real System Requirements?

(Fatfool) #1

Well, it seems we’re all getting rather poor performance out here.

http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24711

I’ve read the system requirements and it says the recommended is a Quad core i5 and a Radeon 5850. That on it’s own is absurdly high for a non e-peen game(Crysis) but let’s put that aside.

Splash Damage has obviously tested this game and so it would be helpful if they’d list out the requirements required to run the game smoothly on their end. Not just ‘recommended’ but smoothly. For example, despite the so called ‘requirements’ of ETQW, I found I needed an 8800GTX to play it smoothly at 1680 X 1050.

Right now I’m on an Opteron 4180 (2.6ghz Lisbon Core; oh don’t claim it’s unsupported. It’s basically a sort of Phenom II X6 Thuban that can’t do dynamic overclocking) and a Radeon 5870 which I’m already pushing on liquid (yes I’ve applied the 11.5a hotfix).

I’m going to presume I ‘meet’ the recommended requirements. So what’s going to make it run smoothly? Do I need to drop a second Opteron 4180 processor into my other unused socket. Or is it the graphics card?

I’ve posted this somewhere already but I meet the minimum system requirements for Brink, as listed on the back of the box, and the game runs smoothly for me at 1280X1024:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
2GB RAM
Windows XP (SP3)
nVidia 8600 GT (actually below minimum requirements)

EDIT: ET:QW also runs great on my system.

Brink has low fps with almost all ATI cards, it is said that AMD will fix it with drivers as they found out the cause of the problem. For Nvidia the system reqs are pretty much correct, I can play well with a GTX260 SE.

Yeah the link’s up there. But you don’t actually meet the minimum requirements.

I’ve tried 1680 X 1050 low with an 8600GTS and QX6700. ETQW was a no go for me.

Definition of smooth for me is 60 FPS at least 90% of the time.

How do I even access the console in Brink? I can’t find it in the manual. Also, how do I check the FPS?

Control Alt \ or control alt ~ depending if its euro or us keyboard

then type com_showfps 1
ui_fov 90 too cuse default fov is 70 wich sux.

Q6600@3ghz and 460 gtx. Normally it runs >100 fps but with some people doing things in an open space it can drop somewhere near 30 fps.

And since aiming starts to feel increasingly floaty and weird when the game drops below 60fps, it’s one of the things making it really hard to just enjoy the game for me.

“And since aiming starts to feel increasingly floaty and weird when the game drops below 60fps, it’s one of the things making it really hard to just enjoy the game for me.”

I agree with that, I don’t care about the numbers of FPS …
The problem it’s the aiming … No precision below 60 FPS …

(Fatfool) #10

It keeps dropping for me too.

Hell, it even drops when you least want it to drop like when you do a slide. It’s hard to shoot when your’re sliding and firing and the Frames suddenly drop.

Hi Kurnuttaja,

it it is said that AMD will fix the problem and that they identified the problem ? can you please link your source?

I believe they already patched their driver (hotfixes a and b), it probably fixed 1 person out of 100 who had hi end AMD cards.

But I couldn’t find any new information regarding this matter since the latest hotfix. Being in the dark is the most frustrating things as I don’t see SD or AMD communicating anymore on this matter:( are you sure that there is still hope for this?

Thanks

There is a bug with mouse lag with AMD cards that the following announcement addresses:
http://twitter.com/#!/catalystcreator

Mouse lag issue will be fixed in Catalyst 11.6 release (aiming for June 15th release)

This tends to happen with Vertical Sync enabled.

We’re looking into the issue the OP is describing.

I’m pretty sure that mouse lag occurrence Catalyst Creator talks about is the issue on the desktop for the top right hand corner of the screen. When you drag the cursor across the very top corner about a centimeter in, it feels magnetic.

Okay, I’m gonna wait for that. I use vertical sync because of the doom 3 engine’s tearing.

The mouse lag feels like the menu lag. On a side note, why do the menus always lag? Happened in ETQW too.

their hotfix brought my FPS from like 10 FPS to ~ 30 with frequent drops so I could you know, actually START to play the game. But for a Radeon 5870, (as with any unearthly expensive graphics board, that is unacceptable.)

Hell, I’m even giving the card a near 20% overclock and it’s still sluggish.

get the brink tool and you can alter the mouse settings. i have raw input and no smoothing and it seems better

Those are default values…
