Okay so changing graphic settings lower, then restarting game gives you worse FPS

(Rhyno) #1

So a bit of explaining first. I removed my main ShooterEngine.ini file and wanted to use in game graphical presets. So when you launch the game the first time (for me anyway) the default preset is High. I wanted to use Medium. So I selected the Medium preset and I went into a local server with the console. Now as many of you probably are aware when you change presets or any graphical setting in Dirty Bomb for that matter you are given the message that you may need to restart the game before some settings take effect. I wanted to see the FPS difference before the reset and after.

So this is fresh off changing graphic preset to Medium in main menu and loading into a local server

FPS is 145. Whatever it’s fine. Restart game.

After restarting the game and standing in the same spot with exact crosshair placement you receive 10 FPS less. Not sure what that’s about.

It’s the same damn pic…you didn’t restart anything

If you took the time to actually click on the pictures and look at the FPS you would realize they are in fact different pictures.

Did that…and saw the same exact position only a few seconds to a couple minutes later. Same cross hair position, same everything. Looks like you just let the FPS lower and took another screen

I dunno dude…not gonna argue. You hafta see what i see when I look at the screens

I don’t think anyone fully understands this game’s performance quirks, not even the devs.

Can you stop and take a minute to realize what you are saying? Why would I fake a screenshot and post feedback on a forum? What does that benefit me? I’m here giving game performance feedback. Also I could point out many things different within the pictures.

By all means…point out the differences. So then you aren’t so frustrated with the 10 less FPS.

But those screens are the same cept for the FPS to me…and I don’t care the differences. What it means to me is that the FPS went down as it does in EVERY game. From 145 to 135…heaven forbid!

Are you blind?

Side-by-side comparison of few of the VERY obvious spots.
(Left being medium preset, right high - sorry for the flip)

You’re doing nothing but trolling now. Is there a difference between 20 FPS and 30 FPS? Yes there is. If you could stop posting in this thread that would be nice. You aren’t adding anything to the discussion.

This is because , higher settings puts more load on your GPU. And your GPU is capable of handling it , perfectly.

Lower settings tries to distribute that load on to your CPU as well. And your CPU isnt doing ‘perfectly fine’, hence the FPS drops…

Happens on a lot of UE games

Thank you for the explanation

Reasons why you get slightly lower FPS:

  1. Quite a few of the options that get turned off in medium only affect dynamic situations (dynamic shadows, better dynamic lightning, motion blur…) , you are in a fairly static setting.
  2. You are however not in a perfect static situation (did a back and forth comparsion). your gun is in a slightly different position, the hud position changed slightly there is movement in the scene (tree foliage, the flying birds…) all this could constribute to a bit more work for your system.
  3. My understanding is that you did the test like this? Load trainyard looked for a nice spot changed, the settings made the first screenshot, then restarted imidiently loaded up trainyard run to the same spot and took the screenshot. This could mean that DB was still not fully ready building the map up (texture streaming and stuff…) which costs performance aswell.

Overall it seems that around 140 FPS is the maxlimit your system can put out. No matter what (somewhere is a bottleneck could be anything GPU, RAM, CPU, Motherboard or anything else really). So you wont see any further increase (which is nice cause there is no reason not to play in high for you). In that scenario the 3 points above + natural fps variance could explain why you see less fps in that particuliar location. I’d recommend to test both settings with the intro of the tutorial. That intro flyby into skyhammers head is a. very demanding and has dynamic content b. always the same.
