Ok so I'm totally lame and clueless

Hi,

I would really like to start designing some map for ET, but at this point i notice im completely clueless about it. I have just downloaded GtkRadiant for Linux, ran it and felt pretty silly. I don’t understand at all how I’m supposed use it… all mapping experience I have dates back to good ol’ DOOM and that lovely DEU editor elder people here will remember :banghead:

So, is there some general, from-the-beginning tutorial on RTCW/ET map creation? am i supposed to be a 3d graphics guru to build them? do i need to learn some scripting language for simple maps?

Thanks!

well, presuming you already have a quake 3 engine game, download the right editor from www.qeradiant.com, since the et editor isn’t out yet.

then, read the manual and do the tutorial.

also, only use brushes, and don’t texture them.

once the et editor comes out, its safe to use entities and textures

The GTK editor can be very daunting when you open it for the first time. Its not the worlds easier thing to learn but it is possible. Start with the GTK Radiant site and pick an engine to work with. Like for example Q3 or RTCW.

Alot of the basics for the editor are similar for most game engines. The editor does support alot of different games which you can edit for. The ET manual will not be aimed at people with no mapping experience. The manual will assume you have some experience of the GTK editor and an understanding of Q3 technology.
