OK so i'm totally clueless

Hi all,

I just had a look at a game based on movie Black Hawk Down which looks good but uses a rather crappy engine, i think it’s the Delta Force engine which is probably a rehash of some other engine… i get really crappy fps even in closed rooms with 3 people, and the graphics quality isnt half as good as ET…

But anyway, the game is funny and i’ve been thinking about using it as a model for my first attempt at an ET mod. Since I never edited any quake-style game i’m all lost (my mapping experience is mostly hacking around Doom with good ol’ DEU 2d map editor, mwahaha). So i thought a reasonable first goal would be changing the weapons from ww2 to modern ones… the mp40/thompson get replaced by ak47 / m16, the k43 gets replaced by m21 or whatever, etc. As far as i understand ET, modding weapons requires:
a) creating a new 3d object representing the gun (hard!)
b) tweaking the gun’s variables: bullet speed, rate of fire, damage, etc

So, my question is basically: HOW THE FSCK DO I GET STARTED WITH THIS :banana:

Plan plan plan plan! Read read read!

Plan out everything and anything you want done. Break it down, make notes of what each thing is and what you want things to do. Brainstorm any ideas and lay down some guidelines you want to follow. THEN consider if you still want to go ahead… :wink: Now, im not going into how to do this by code etc its up to you to learn this be it from here, code3arena and wherever else.

Start with basics, if your new to this sort of thing, it WILL deffenately take a bit of time, most of this will be learning not creating. Heres how i’d go about doing this. (Note btw, I know nothing about the Quake 3/RTCW engine/coding. Only small bits and pieces. I know VB and PHP/MySQL etc so I know how to go about things)

So, its just a Weapon A into Weapon X scenario. Heres meh:

[li] Get the other weapon info you require. Rate of Fire, Bullets per Clip, Damage per Bullet, Speed, Spread, Recoil, 2nd Feature.
[/li][li] Implement it into the current weapons. Eg, Thomson = AK47, Mp40 = M16 etc… So they act like the other weapons. (Test this to fuck, and keep consistent checks and balancing issues top priority)
[/li][li] Replace the Model
[/li][li] Change the Sounds
[/li][li] Fix the Animations
[/li][li] Anything else, Icons etc…

How to edit the rate of fire by the way? I can’t seem to figure it out :S

just edit the big table in bg_misc.c, field nextShot or whatever
