ok, i'm new at mapping, so one, but one important question--

(Auriel) #1

whats a good amount of brushes on a map? i’ve got about 700-1000 and i’m about 25-30% done. if its too much, any hints on how to reduce it :???:

there’s no certain amount you should have - just do your map so that it looks good, though (probably) 4000 brushes sounds like a very little map, currently we at wolfproject are working on a map that probably will get near to 30.000 brushes (32.000 is max) but the map is huge…

what you have to watch is performance, how many brushes you use is not that important

Brushes are a very rough indication of how big your map is and 1 brush could well be split into several surfaces by the compiler. For example fueldump has 13777 brushes, where as Oasis has 19455 brushes. Both are large maps and unless you have some very complex brushwork then I think you have a long way to go yet.

The best thing you can do is compile the map on a regular basis so that you know how your map is going. It is when you compile your map that you get an accurate indictation of it working or not.
