OK, I want to build some maps so...

(MadAxeMan) #1

…I know there are lots of threads and urls to other sites with articles…
…but…
…in a nutshell what are the minimal applications I need to create a new map (I will be waiting for the ET tools of course)?

I will probably use stock objects/textures to start with and then move on to modelling some new ones on a future map. (In fact I’m really interested in the map scripting, the rest will be fluff to make it look good  ).

Don’t give me choices, I’m easily confused. Probably due to excessive

I’m a total noob at q3 mapping. Brushwork to me involves a wooden implement with horsehair.

[edit: oh and I just read that “Editor shopping spree” thread so I guess just the new GTK… …but what about terrains etc??]

Download the latest version of GTKRadiant and start mapping for Q3. (http://www.qeradiant.com/) The ET documentation will not teach you how to map. The manual assumes you are familiar with map creation and more importantly familiar with the current style of GTK editors.

Cheers Sock I did that but of course I’m of the mold that I build a room and I need to see it working… …as it doesn’t export to ET yet I had the prospect of re-installing half-life and at that point decided to start planning a map instead.

I’m gonna assume I can use all textures/models currently in ET and from that I have all the tools I need - do I just use notepad for scripting?

As an aside, if anyone is good at map creation but cr@p at scripting and wants to collaborate then I’d be interested.

Notepad is a good place to start, but i’d recommend you try out textpad, and set up some custom syntax highlighting, it can help alot.

I personally used http://www.ultraedit.com/ for creating/editing scripts. The keyword highlight features of the advanced text editors are extremely worthwhile. It does not take too long to set them up either.

The current version of GTKRadiant is missing the latest features we used to create ET maps. It does not have the ET entities file and has no documentation for creating a ET map. Half-Life is an very old engine and generally a different style of editor. (Worldcraft) I assumed you could get hold of Q3 for the hands on approach to mapping.

Hmm… so you didn’t perhaps create a Syntax Definition file which could be made available for download eh?

That Highlighting thing is a good TIP. Thx
