OK Honestly, Should I Get Brink?

(Vanchatron) #1

2 weeks ago I heard about Brink. I liked what I saw and heard a load of people going on about how great it’s gonna be etc etc. So I preordered it. I got the money put on a gamecard and tomorrow I’m going to pick it up from my local Games shop.

I decided to come on to the forums to see what people have been saying about it seeing as it’s launched now. I found the following reviews/complaints:

Also, there was the bad reviews from Gamespot & IGN which both gave it a 6/10.

Now before anybody decides to flame me for caring about Gamespot’s reviews, let me just say that so far every single game I’ve liked has gotten a good review at Gamespot & every single game I’ve NOT liked has been given a bad or mediocre review so for ME at least, I usually trust them. Now obviously there ARE people who think Gamespot is a joke at reviews & what not, and that’s fine, it’s your opinion.

Anyway, based on all this I’m not really sure whether I’m happy to get the game now. I could give it a try and hope that any problems there are will be sorted out, but usually this type of bad first impression drives people away from the game, so even if the problems DO get fixed, a lot of players may have already gotten a refund.

I know that many of you tend to disregard any bad reviews and say it’s all bull, but at the end of the day these are problems that reviewers seem to have picked up on, and so have some players, so they can’t really be ignored.

I’m willing to give the game a chance if you honestly feel there’s nothing wrong with it, and that it will pick up, but if you guys feel I’d be better off spending my gamecard on something else tomorrow instead of Brink, then I’d appreciate it if you say, otherwise it may end up with me having wasted my money.

Thank you guys.

if you’re willing to wait for the 360 lag issues to be ironed out, by all means grab it and play solo or co-op, if not, choice is obvious

(Vanchatron) #3

Is the lag really as terrible as people are making out? Also, have you a rough idea how long it should take them to fix it?

(boozee84) #4

the game per say is really awesome, it just suffers from some issues at the moment.
but i think once their fixed, it’s gonna be one of the coolest game’s ever made.
i haven’t had so much fun playing a game in years.
i just hope SD comes up with patches asap, cause the majority of players are so impacient nowadays that they’ll sell a great game if it takes longer than a week to run smooth.
i love this game and don’t want it to die out!

Basicly that, wait for it to be patched, you have nothing to lose if you do. Until then just rent it in store if your planning on playing it on 360

Save your money and check back in a month or 2

(GingThu) #7

Basically this. The game could really be awesome, but there are some major improvements needed. Like a party system.

(Gamer2Gamers) #8

buy L.A. Noire or Witcher 2 on the 17th save your money come back like the above poster said in a month or two and you’ll most likely have a refined version of brink that should of been released.

A few posts into the first thread you linked to is this little gem:
Why did you only post the bad reviews? There are plenty of reviews that really liked the game.

To me this is one of hte best online games of the last 5-10 years.

Just more people want to play as Rambo and go solo COD style, this game NEEDS teamwork.

Great job on this game Splash, some people still like objective/teamwork games.

In conclusion, Splash Damage I now love you, this game is a breath of fresh air in a stale genre.

Here are some of the reviews that liked the game:

Eurogamer - 8/10
“…an exceptional team shooter, smart, supremely well balanced and with a unique, exciting art ****”

Official Xbox Magazine UK (June issue) - 4 Stars
"A meticulously designed Live shooter"

Front Towards Gamer - 9.0 ("Amazing")
"...a brilliant departure from the run of the mill shooters out there."

Xbox 360 Achievements - 8/10 ("Great")
"...it hits the ground running and then beats you in the face with awesomeness every step of the way."

The Sixth Axis - 9/10
"Brink has massive potential."

MSN - 8/10
"...there's a lot to love about Brink."

IncGamers - 8.8
"A refreshing and detailed experience that rewards intelligence and team work."

Videogamer.com - 8/10
"Splash Damage achieves the impossible: a game that feels fresh in the stalest of genres."

Gamona - 87 - (Gold Award, Design Award, Multiplayer Award)
"If you even have the faintest interest in team-based shooters, you can't get past this one"

The Guardian - 4 stars
"Brink deserves to be ranked among the finest co-op games available."

spieletipps - 88
"This is what the genre needs."

Gamers Global - 9.0
"The surprisingly smart AI is probably the best in the shooter genre."

The Gamers Paradise - 10/10
"An immensely fun and fast-paced action FPS"

NowGamer - 8.3
"unique, compelling and intelligently designed"

Computer & Video Games - 8/10
"...you'll become hopelessly addicted to its brand of co-operative, ****based multiplayer action."

GamersNet - 8.9
“a wonderful shooter that makes cooperation fun”
The majority of reviews are positive.

Also, it’s human nature to complain and to compete and bicker. There are many more threads that have been started telling how the user’s loving their experience, but these don’t tend to grow legs like the complaint threads.

The game is, on average, currently a 7/10 game with the overriding notion that the foundation is very solid but the structure needs some repairs.

If you can afford it, buy it now and get practised for when the patches hit and it takes off. Just imo.

Best bet. I can still enjoy it, but really theres some issues that are just breaking, and if your on the edge, then no. If you know of its problems, seen it in action, and believe that it will still be a fun game, then go for it. It’ll get sorted out eventually. If your just unsure, you think you might but you just arnt digging it, then no…

I’d say wait, sit back and watch, then get one of the many, many used copies out and around…

(PlaidHero) #11

Like people have said, this. The game has unbelievable potential, but was so incredibly poorly released and feels untested that many people can’t see that right now. If they fix everything, I can see this being my console Team Fortress 2. And by that I mean a game I’ll come back to when I want to play something fun.

(Nail) #12

OP has already pre-ordered and paid, but on a gamecard, he’s wondering if he should use it, I say yes, SD is known for timely patches, whether they can conform to Microsoft’s 4 mb limit, hope so

(SladeNoctis) #13

They might have to release multiple patches especially for online issues.

(Nail) #14

it’s in Microsoft’s best interests to have this game succeed, pre-orders for 360 outsold L.A. Noire, maybe they’ll cut SD some slack

when a pig’s ass turns gold

First of all, IGN is the worst critic of all time. If it doesn’t have Mario in it… it sucks… or is alright.

Secondly, if you don’t want to play Call of Duty anymore, want a good time, and can live with a little lag once and a while… then BRINK is your game. Few critics actually know how to appreciate a game, as you can judge by the reviews, all my friends and I aren’t critics, but I have 20+ friends who will tell you BRINK is an amazing game and worthy of a 9+ review (if you ignore the lag and technical issues).

(throwback8) #16

gamers2gamers, off topic a bit, but I can’t seem to find a definitive answer to whether the witcher 2 is going to launch on multiple platforms or just PC. At this point it seems to be just PC, as VGRelease dates has the xbox version dated for the 17th, but it says rumored instead of confirmed. I am picking up my copy of LA Noire monday at midnight and figured I might check the witcher 2 out if it was multiplatform on launch. Thanks in advance.

(Om3ga) #17

If you get it for box it’s better to w8 2 weeks untill SD fix most of major probs, like online lag.
If you get it for PC, now it’s good time to get it, only major prob what PC have atm is AMD video driver bug (4xxx series). Online lag with PC is VERY Rare, and Brink is best as MP game.

(silicon_ghost) #18

Save your money. And don’t buy it until you can get it for under $10. Otherwise all you are doing is encouraging rat bastards like Spash Damage to release a horribly broken product and then fund their beta testing period.

I am so disgusted with this game and this company, I hope their company collapses from insufficient sales.

(silicon_ghost) #19

Timely? My co-op doesn’t work on PC. I paid for something that is on the box but absolutely is BROKEN. I wish they would timely just give me a refund.

(xTriXxy) #20

considering game by scores from reviews is same as buying graphic card by score from 3dmark.
Graphic card with high score in 3dmark can have poor gaming performance.

Its only up to you. Buy it.
