oh, hey halos... you came back?

(SkillerBehindYou) #21

I still dont know what you guys are talking about… pics?

(Seyu) #22

No, they haven’t.

(RadBrad31) #23

My guess is that it’s there to help the new players. The devs have said they want this to be a game where people who were traditionally single player that shyed away from multiplayer would be drawn into it easily. As a transition game from the single player experience to the multiplayer. They’ve taken many steps to make it easier on people to do it. One being turning the VOIP off so you don’t get criticized for being a newbie verbally. I believe this is another way. Easier way to see your targets and teammates.

Now of course the more core crowd doesn’t need this (or in some cases, want it). I would say play a few rounds, and if it’s noticeable and bothers you while playing, turn it off. But I bet in the heat of battle it isn’t as noticeable as it is sitting idle watching a video clip.

(SockDog) #24

I thought they’d said that differentiating enemies from friendlies at a distance was something the playtesters were reporting. That at a distance rim lights helped alleviate this issue. They’d have preferred not to do it but given the level of customisation on the models it was the only compromise they’d found which allowed both the issue to be resolved and customisation to stay varied.

(SockDog) #25

Oh and as I often get told when discussing the whole “other game modes” topic. If you don’t like it go play a game without it, make a mod, accept SD want it this way and don’t want to take a step back. etc etc

(Linsolv) #26

It’s really obvious on downed enemies, and in that case who cares.

Yeah, it’s there on regular enemies too, but it’s not anywhere near as noticeable.

(Seyu) #27

SockDog Come on, man, if that was the reason, there were a dozen other better solutions for that problem.

(SockDog) #28

I warn you now I’m not really up for a big discussion on the topic so by all means don’t respond. but what better solutions? From what little I read on the other discussions they all had impacts elsewhere in the game.

I can see why some people don’t like it, they’re the same people who didn’t like arrows or other stuff in previous games. Seems to be a very personal preference. So for me, personally, it seems like something included to keep the game fluid and avoid user frustration.

(Herandar) #29

Really, because they were not offered up as alternatives on the two+ threads on rim lighting/auras that were created after rim lighting/auras became public knowledge? For edification, please list at least 12 “better” solutions. I’ll even give you one:

  1. Remove customization options, so that all Resistance look alike & all Security look alike and both are easily discernable at a distance. (“Better”)

(LyndonL) #30
  1. Turn off glow on enemies, and add glow to friendlies.

However it is what it is. Deal with it or find a server with it disabled. Tada!
I personally am going to wait til I’m PLAYING the game first to see if it’s as game breaking as people make out. If it is, I’ll turn it off on my server, if not then who knows.

(Herandar) #31

But is it “better”? Or just an alternate form of the same game-crippling system?

(LyndonL) #32

It is better. People’s main concern I gather is that the enemies stand out so you don’t need to search for them. I think the “detracts from the art style” reason is just a secondary justification.

(madness) #33

your teammates have names above them. in white(?).
enemies have names above them only when you aim at them, and they are red.

this should suffice to tell friend from foe. not sure why the goo is even necessary, but it wont be a disadvantage if u turn it off.

(tokamak) #34

I’ts NOT art, it’s gameplay I’m concerned about! I can watch those gameplay videos with crossed eyes until I see two screens and still I would be able make out my targets. Now I’m glad that Timmy can play the game as well now, but there was no need to make it a default setting. Focus (and not just optical focus I mean mental focus) should be rewarded, a player should be constantly aware of what happens around him without the game pointing it out to him.

The distinguishing friends from enemies is absolute and utter nonsense because all that could have been achieved with indicating the team-mates. They’ve NEVER explained why they had to colour the enemies so my guessing is as good as that of these ‘supporters’ or should I say ‘condoners’ (you don’t actually like it, you’re just going with whatever SD gives you).

[QUOTE=madness;293649]your teammates have names above them. in white(?).

Indeed, without the goo it’s already perfectly feasible to see who your team-mates are.

It’s just blatantly obvious they tested this game in a console setting. Even on a HDTV the graphics can be a bit granular and it’s difficult to see what happens in the distance. They just never stood still and wondered about what it might be like on the PC. So although they might have optimised the game for each platform, when it comes to the gameplay itself, it all got tarred with the same brush and that’s just unforgivable.

(Bullveyr) #35

@tokamak

That way there are at least no complaints about people using the least visible clothing options.

That doesn’t mean I’m a “Goo Fan”.

(tokamak) #36

Nobody complained about the GDF temperate/snow/desert camouflage in ETQW. I’ve haven’t seen anybody call for bright-skins (let alone this crap) in a SD-game.

(Bullveyr) #37

because everybody had it

(tokamak) #38

Well the strogg didn’t. They stood out in the snow like a sore thumb.

Also note that the orange crap is different for each map. The bright maps don’t have it nearly as much as the dark maps, but then again, you’d say that in the dark maps the outfits and colours matter even less.

(Bullveyr) #39

My point was that you couldn’t choose a less visible outfit.
I’m pretty sure that some people would “abuse” the customization.

Surely not an optimal solution but I find it understandable.

Maybe you get a second reference besides the Tokmak Revolver, cg_orangecrap 0/1.

(Shadowcat) #40

Could we please hold off this conversation until after everyone who wants to complain about it has actually played the game. I know its a poor argument to say “you haven’t played it yet”, but release is this week, and a few of the people who were worried about it have said that its not all that noticeable; and have yet to hear of anyone who has played the game and still complained about it.
