Offline play

(Rex) #1

I hope there will be an offline modus for the game, that you can play without any internet connection.
I know there are already plans for bots.

(.N.E.R.D.) #2

They should ask Coldcookieweapon, he has experience with bots

(Whhaayy) #3

i think bots are useless but a lan function would be pretty cool

(Dthy) #4

I’d love this so, you know, I can actually play when I’m at Uni! All I have are QW bots

(Mustang) #5

How is a decent internet connection and/or network not top of your list when searching for accommodation?

(Dthy) #6

It’s a decent connection, just ports blocked for security. (Uni halls, not my own house).

(.N.E.R.D.) #7

So why is your Uni so crazy lame ? Samu can play @Uni

(zeroooo) #8

PUSH! wanna see an offline mode, with or without bots^^

just want to try some things on the maps or play the map on my own, to check several things out…

(Nail) #9

I concur, would do a lot to alleviate frustration with DB at the moment

I hate to break this to you guys. Being a f2p I doubt there will be an offline mode. If there is, it will probably be exclusively against bots… I obviously don’t know but speaking out of experience with past f2p games.

(Bangtastic) #11

you are never alone, there are still bots

Most important of all… if there are bots, they better have some sort of intelligence. That’s one thing I hate about the gaming industry at large… AI almost always sucks arse.

They’re always presented as the most limited aspect of support, or ridiculously scripted and headshot-aimbot’ed.

If some effort were to go into it and make them at least somewhat tactical like a decent RTS’s AI.

When it comes to practicing with bots, I’m of the philosophy that less practice of a higher quality is superior to lots of practice with nitwits running around the field, sticking their fat heads in front of your rifle.

But for an offline mode… it’s F2P and you have to log in to access your profile… that automatically kills any concept of true offline. Even if there were LAN modes, I foresee the necessity of making sure everyone still has an online connection for the sake of profile verification, access to whatever microtransactions or normal freebie unlocks you’ve earned.

Of course all that aside, if the only thing you really want an offline mode for is to practice movement/shooting/class-ability-switching-while-doing-everything-else… it would be madness not to release the game with a properly fleshed out and INTELLIGENT tutorial map. I still think the challenges that were in Brink, that kind of thing would work very well as solo missions to achieve leaderboard scores AND teach mechanics, but a proper tutorial map for the full multiplay aspect… it can be done, just requires some genuine thought.

Tribes did it well with their tutorial map that allowed you to also test drive weapons that you had not yet unlocked (pre-GOTY purchase). That tutorial/testing map would be great for that kind of thing too. Let’s say there are customisable airstrikes you can purchase… that give you a preferred colour as well as kill announcement to anyone killed by your strike.

Not seeing a huge value in this. Bots have proven to be far from satisfying to play against and I’m not sure it’s worth expending a lot of effort getting them working just for people to occasionally derp offline. Then again, I guess if bots are coming as part of some co-op objective horde mode then it’s less work. Still, seems to be a big ask for what is probably going to be a tiny proportion of players in their target market.

When I first started playing CS way back whenever. I played vs bots only on a local host. This was so I didn’t get moaned at for doing the wrong things! How many other people ever used to do this when they were a bit younger?

(Humate) #15

Only for RTS games, to learn the units.
With FPS always jumped straight in.

Thing is though you expect more than a frag fest from your opponents and teammates in this gamegame. Even the hostage escort is too complex for the AI in CS. I’ve always thought that was incredibly bad form in FPS’s… either do it right or not at all.

Everytime I have played with AI in an SD game, even if its just one or two on an otherwise filled server… their stupidity and sometimes interference was noticeable.

I for one will not log onto a server anymore if there are bots activated to fill in the holes. DB is supposed to be breaking all of these counter productive, counter intuitive habits in the industry… shoddy AI is one of those things.

I think people are asking for a training mode, learn the maps, classes, roles etc.

(BomBaKlaK) #18

I vote for this !

Yes, but I am talking about offline play. But I do think having some sort of online BOT system could work too. Try look up the bots used in ET and how smart they were in comparison to the CS bots. Also, the bots in ET were made by a few coders who played the game, nothing official I think!

Fritzbot coder helped with QW AI iirc
