so im first trim obs user and wondering what the best settings for obs are
im trying to record for the epic kills contest and its recording choppy as hell and its killing my fps making it too choppy to play

im running an asus 290x(water cooled)
4790(water cooled) with 32gb ram

windows 10 and 7 dual boot
all ssd system

i have a 2nd pc that’s almost as powerful(4770k with xfx 390 GB GPU with 16gb ram but no money at the moment for a capture card,

i was gonna twitch stream but realized i suck too much most of the time to stream

Have a look for the vce fork of the regular old obs (not studio) it will allow you to use the gpu to encode video and take the load off your cpu, what i used to use when I was using my 280x.

i have studio installed. should i uninstall and go with the non studio version??? i fugured stuio was the other version with added features

OBS Studio is the version with added features, but unfortunately lacks AMD’s VCE/AMF (or whatever they call it these days) support. If you just looking to record straight up gameplay then the extra features wont really matter, but OBS Studio is the far superior option for streaming/multi audio track recordings etc…

I say keep OBS Studio but also grab the fork for the regular version here https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/obs-branch-with-amd-vce-support.13996/

I might not be able to help much with settings since i am an nvidia user now but lemme know if you do need help we can figure it out.

You may also be able to use the iGPU on your cpu, but the quality may not be that great or may wig out entierly and just plain out stop working randomly (from what testing I did with Intel Quicksync on my old processor)

Heres a guide if you go down the Intel Quicksync route

Heres a guide if you go down the AMD obs fork thingy route

Didnt watch the video myself but its short and sweet and should be able to get you up and running.

Go and make sure the cpu preset is kinda low, but no so low that whenever you move fast it gets all pixelated. Also downscale to 720p so that the cpu doesnt have to record, encode, and write full hd to your ssd, then also make sure youre recording in 30 fps for literally half the file size. play dirty bomb on all the lowest settings, and in console type “texturepoolsize 1” without the quotes, and like previous comments said, download old obs and get your gpu to help.

Does the OBS window have a message along the lines of “Encoder overloaded!” while you’re recording? One thing you can try is changing the recording profile for x264 (if that’s what you’re using) to zerolatency, but if it’s really grinding to a halt it might not make a lot of difference. It can take a lot of trial and error to get OBS running nicely although once you get it right it works really well. Another thing to try - start recording your session before you actually join a server or start a map, I find that reduces stuttering and performance issues, and avoid alt-tabbing if you’re playing fullscreen.

Thanks ill try it out tomorow it will be so late by the time i come home it will be time to go right to sleep

Also as far as the igpu, its currently being used to power my 42 inch tv mounted above my monitors. I had to use the igpu for windows media center as amd card/crimson drivers alone gave me hdcp errors that took days of settings changes that i dont wabt to touch

So i got home early from class tonight and spent over an hour messing with obs trying everything you guys sugested lots of thanks by the way. But i couldnt get it to work right it still killed my fps and recorded either bloctchy or stuttered like crazy so getting ready to give up intried the amd raptr ap that uses play tv and it works perfectly no fps drops and perfect recordings. Unfortunately it doesnt do twitch streaming nearly as well as obs so next month its off to microcenter to look at capture cards

Ah sucks that you couldnt get it working, but glad you found a solution! Cant wait to see your videos. gl

Why not just use Plays.tv to record and OBS to stream at the same time? I do that with the GPU encoding Plays’tv recording and Quicksync from my i5 to handle the streaming so the CPU doesn’t get hit too hard while playing the game
