Objective mode respawn wave times - why are they out of sync?

(ProfPlump) #1

I like it in Stopwatch how both teams have their respawn waves at the exact same intervals and times, as it allows you to make strategic decisions on whether you should wait to kill your opponent so that you can catch them on a long spawn, or (if you’re on low health) retreat so that you don’t get caught on a long spawn yourself.

However, in Objective the respawn waves get out of sync for some reason (I think it’s because the attackers’ spawn simply resets after each objective is taken, while the defenders’ spawn continues at its usual intervals) and this makes the game less predictable, more luck-based and less strategic (since you can only make decisions based on your own spawn wave, rather than both teams’ spawn waves).

Why can’t the two respawn waves stay in sync? Is this a bug that nobody thought was important enough to fix? Or is it by design?

In stopwatch I’ve never seen the spawn timers at the exact time. They’ve always been around 3-6 seconds different.

it is like this purposely. There is a reason for it but i cant remember what it is. I will look for it later

Quote from Amerika (not a dev so take it with a grain of salt):

Spawn timers in Stopwatch mode are exactly the same for both Attackers and Defenders. So when your guys spawn theirs spawn. Which make spawn nading in Stopwatch ridiculous so IMO it needs to be offset enough to make sure you can’t easily do that. It’s too big of a factor in competitive at times and it’s highly annoying in pubs when a good player decides to spawn nade based on time (hidden airstrikes are ridiculous).

Objective has varying spawn times based on where you are at on the map. They do this as a balancing mechanism to give offense and defense a similar chance of winning since it would suck if Offense or Defense was pretty much always guaranteed to win. Stopwatch is more heavily balanced towards the attackers as setting a time and then having the other team beat it is more interesting than potential stalemates.

To clarify a little further - the spawn timers are out of sync in objective for the sole reason that you are only playing one side, so both require equal advantages and disadvantages for winning, else the game will not be fair. One way this is balanced is the skewed respawn time which often means the attackers will spawn out of sync with the defenders, giving them the slight upper-hand if they are being pushed back too much - the same applies to the defenders if the attackers are a lot stronger and positioning is better.

And @LANshark that is correctly summarised by Amerika, previously. Hope this helps explain the reasoning behind it a little more.

Like with TF2, an attacking team would usually have a shorter or more advantageous spawn timer due to them usually being at a disadvantage in terms of map control compared to defense.

Plus they have a harder job of actually DOING something rather than just shooting the guys trying to do the thing.
