NPC Story Interaction?

(SANDMAN DAN) #1

I was re-watching some videos of container city and I got to wondering; when playing with friends, will the commander and those troops he has following him escorting the drone be replaced by your friends with jump in jump out co-op or will they just live indefinitely? And if they will be replaced with your friends will they be in the cut scenes with custom character models?

I was a bit confused about that aspect. Thanks in advance.

I think they are replaced with player character models. not %100 on that,

First, there’s no “commander”. When you play, you’re just another guy on the team.

And yes, all those guys with you would be replaced with your friends. Team sizes are always at 8 (unless you are playing on a PC server where they have bots disabled, assuming that is possible). So if you starta coop game and 3 of your friends join you the four of you will be playing with 4 bots on your tream.

Don’t know about the cut scenes. I imagine everyone sees a different cut scene with his own character replacing one of the characters in it, but it could be that everyone who is playing appears in the cut scene too.

The reason i say “commander” is because if you have seen the video the black man delivering orders seems very animated and I find that hard to translate to a standard player wanting to just pay the game.

The event seemed very scripted for story purpose, he seemed very important and I still don’t understand how that will translate while playing with friends.

I would imagine its just a random player used in those cutscenes, but perhaps its the player with the most xp at that point? or the player who completes the objective. I dont think there is any actual gameplay difference for anyone involved in a cutscene

That’s a good question nonetheless…

i think i read on the twitter feed that custom player models will be in the cutscenes. But im unable to check or link it as my net speed is capped out :…sorry

You’re correct.

I’ve been wondering this myself.

The part the OP speaks of, if I’ve read correctly, wasn’t a cutscene, but actual gameplay, with rather animated/scripted bots standing there talking. It’s right at the start, and I assume most of you know it; they get fired at and debate where the fire came from, conclude “It wasn’t close” at which point someone takes another shot at them and they all duck. I too don’t see how these NPC’s could be replaced with humans.

That’s different to the actual cutscenes, where I’ve read on these forums that player characters will be performing mundane tasks in the background (like lifting crates or something).

Any clarification on this would be great.

That’s a cut scene, in this case an intro scene. Not sure how you can get that confused with actual gameplay…

As far as guys getting replaced, I know they said end screens have your guy in them, don’t know if this aplies to all scenes or not, but if they could do it at the end seems like they could do it at the begiining as well and it would be consistent.

The question is do they replace just one guy with your guy, or all guys with everyone who’s playing? I’m guessing just one guy with yours, and he’s probably not talking or anything.

The Container City footage you’re speaking of is over a year old, I think from very late 2009. A lot of changes have gone into Brink since then. The UI and customization menus are totally different, grenade launchers aren’t OHKs (and don’t send ragdolls flying everywhere, as you see in the video). I think it’s safe to assume the “in-game cutscene” you’re talking about has been replaced with a more conventional one where you’re just watching from a camera instead of having control over your character.

SD said a long time ago that the avatars that are in the game will replace the default characters in intro/cut/end scenes. Given that this is very simple to acheive, it is extremely to hard to imagine that it has not been implemented. They have recorded every line of dialogue in each of the voices so that no matter which voice pack you or your friends select, they can all say all of the lines.

That said, for the more story-driven opening and ending scenes, it is unclear how prominent you and your friends will be. There are NPC faction leaders for both sides, though I’ve forgotten their names already. (Brother Chen? or something like that for Resistance.) They have separate dialogue, and they will not be replaced.

Hope this answers your question.
