Noobie + Expert terrain creation tutorial

(Danyboy) #1

I’ve been looking over the Internet and the massive list of links supplied by Sock on the sticky thread- but have yet to find a good tutorial on terrain creation.

I consider myself a noob on terrains as i’ve never made one using heightmap > alphmap etc… ive always done it the long way :frowning:

So really would like to know if anyone knows or has written a good, in-depth tutorial from heightmap creation, to alphamaps and then to import to QER and the metashader all tied into one.

Here’s good one:

This one could also be useful:

Those Tram fellas are great!

Tons of info in their forums.

ok those are pretty good guides - but am having problem with my test terrain,

Ive followed those steps and placed the images used in map creation into the texture folder - everything is happy in EasyGen - i then compile the map and:

WARNING: Couldn’t find image for shader textures/dj_terrain/terrain_3
WARNING: Couldn’t find image for shader textures/dj_terrain/terrain_1to3
WARNING: Couldn’t find image for shader textures/dj_terrain/terrain_0to3
WARNING: Couldn’t find image for shader textures/dj_terrain/terrain_1
WARNING: Couldn’t find image for shader textures/dj_terrain/terrain_0to1
WARNING: Couldn’t find image for shader textures/dj_terrain/terrain_0

Erm - after compile the terrain in game has no texture at all - jus that black and white sqaure - i.e. no texture found.

Any help appreciated

Just to show what result im getting:

doh - solved it myself - always check your generated shader files for spelling mistakes - doh doh doh

The correct terrain - WITH textures

That and make sure you are using Q3map2 in place of standard in template. Tunnleram just corrected me on this:http://www.tramdesign.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=002306

Quoting links from Tramdesign does not work unless people have an account there. You have to register first before you can view the forums.

OK, so I have created my terrain and exported it to a .map file.

How do I then view it?

(hummer) #10

Compile it and do:

/sv_pure 0
/devmap mapname

Aha, I guess I need rtcw to do this?
Or hack it into ET somehow.

Any suggestions…
