Noob in dire distress

(Niccolo Machiavelli) #1

I am newer than new when it comes to Wolfenstien Enemy Territory. So much so that I am unable to actually start it :banghead: seeing as there seems to be lots of Uber gamers haning around here could one of you tell me what the ET console means when it says:
…GLW_ChoosePFD failed
…failed to find an appropriate PIXELFORMAT
…restoring display settings
…WARNING: could not set the given mode (3)
…shutting down QGL
…unloading OpenGL DLL
…assuming ‘3dfxvgl’ is a standalone driver
…initializing QGL
…WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available
…shutting down QGL
----- CL_Shutdown -----
RE_Shutdown( 1 )

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem
This looks like a sweet game but I can’t even get it to work, please help[/img]

Hello!

First of all, this is not really in the right section. It would fit better in General Discussion as this is a general problem.

Secondly, this is the most common problem concerning W:ET. Please search for “not load OpenGL” on these forums, and I’m sure you’ll get more than 10 results where you can read about the solution.

And when you got it to work, this thread is a nice read:
If I never played W:ET . . . .

Hope this gets you started. :wink:

Wrong forum but I’ll take a crack at this.

Windows or Linux?

What video card (or graphics chipset) are you using?
Do you have the latest video drivers for your card?

Sounds like a possible problem with openGL which is usually included with most video drivers these days.

Many apologies, yet another indication of my inferiority as a gamer, I have Windows XP, NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/ Model 64 Pro, Version 5.6.7.3 dated 4/7/2004 –outdated long ago. Thank you for your help

Go to Nvidia’s website and download the drivers.
Make sure they say they will work with that card since it’s an older card.

I don’t know about the Windows drivers but I have that same card in a backup PC running Linux.
I had to used a special driver Nvidia released for older cards.
It’s all on their site.

Other than that, do what Kamikazee said.

could try these, someone I know is using them with same card, there may be newer ones that work

I can’t believe none of you know about the hidden messages that ET puts out in the error logs, see below its quite obvious what is wrong.

GLW_ChoosePFD failed
…failed to find an appropriate PIXELFORMAT
…restoring display settings
…WARNING: could not set the given mode (3)
…shutting down QGL
…unloading OpenGL DLL
…assuming ‘3dfxvgl’ is a standalone driver
…initializing QGL
WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available
…shutting down QGL
----- CL_Shutdown -----
RE_Shutdown( 1 )

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

Get A NeW Gfx Card

Only kidding I’m just bored :smiley:

This must be a satanic message from Bill Gates the 3rd (this is his complete name). Look at this ASCII calculation:

B   =  66
i   =  73
l   =  76
l   =  76

G   =  71
a   =  65
t   =  84
e   =  69
s   =  83

III =   3
     ----
      666

:moo:
