Non-Balance Comp Mod Features?

(Amp) #1

So it’s getting quite clear that, even excluding community proposed balance changes (which I think will harm the game in the long run anyway), Brink may need a mod in order to facilitate the features necessary for competition.

For a history lesson, even Quake 3 had a competition mod early on, with OSP, that didn’t change the balance or rules of the game, but made running, playing in, and spectating tournaments easier and more enjoyable.

So, this thread will be for what features you would like to see in a competition mod that didn’t mess about with the balance of the game.

So to start:

  1. Get rid of leveling/grinding.
    This is the big one.

It makes no sense for someone to have to grind a character to level 20, or spend a level to respec in order to try a new build for a competitive multiplayer game. It’s alright-ish for pubs (although I think it highlights a problem in recent schools of game design), but it means that you’re not allowed to actually play the real game until you’ve spent X number of hours grinding for it.

The itemization and perks with character customization is fine, but it gets stupid when you have to jump through needless hoops to work on your team’s playbook.

I would propose that all “new” characters in the competition mod either start at level 20, or just have the 20 speccing points to spend as desired right out the gate, and making respeccing not have any cost associated with it.

  1. Enable Demo Recording
  2. Enable First-Person Spectating
  3. Enable HUD customization like Quake 4’s Q4Max and Quake 3’s CPMA

Anyone else got anything to add?

  1. GTV/SourceTV/HLTV styled TV relay addon for servers?
  2. Crosshair Options (Including crosshairs from Quake 3/Q4Max)
  3. Picmip 16/r_fullbright 1/cg_forceenemymodels (Like CPMA, so you can select a color for enemies)

Just my thoughts coming from a Quake 3 CPMA and Counter-Strike Source background!

This sums up the general issues quite nicely imo

(chasm) #4
  1. LAN Support
  2. More unlocked CVARS (client and server side)
  3. Spectator/Broadcast friendly options ([hp/timer/percentage] huds, no flash/sticky)

ESL answered that already. All legal abilities are unlocked for every person regardless of level. There should be no specs, the builds don’t add depth or skill most of the universals are things that people get in other fps’ for nothing.

You should not win because you were miss cleo and knew that X player was going to die at this time on this map for that one objective and you could fill that role because you happened to put one point in speed boost on your engy/soldier build or whatever.

For the rest of it Refl3x’s post pretty much gets it right.

  1. CPMA coach styled multi-view option, allowing team coaches to join the game and watch all five players on the same screen (Quake 3 CPMA and Q4Max have this feature!)

This x1000. Let us unlock our client vars and server vars. Let us adjust cool downs, activation timers, durations, numbers, stats, and in some cases the use of it (like combat intuition - sound only). You let us do this, we will try to use your abilities. Some SD dev mentioned that it was too bad we werent using the abilities. Well, you didnt let us beta test them out; so now let us do what we can to make them better, and we will use them. If not, its going to be a stripped down game with only a handful of players who want to play COD4 with parkour.

oh and fix the demo recording.

  1. A ingame GUI that allows us to control our servers to every extent, and make sure it’s easy and versatile.
