Non-apparent features in Brink

(Qhullu) #1

will there be things i see someone else do on a server a year or two after release that make me go “wow! i had no idea you could do that.” ? (for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4PWt0q8hPw )

between the s.m.a.r.t system having a definite “ceiling”, no collisions between player models, predefined places to plant the explosives, altogether accessible and easy to understand skills and perks with clear effects. i don’t see what these non-apparent features could be, maybe there are none.

There most likely will be plenty of different skills and features interfacing with each other in a non-apparent ways. Just because you can’t block your teammates in a doorway doesn’t mean the gameplay isn’t deep.

What? You mean you can walk through each other?

I think Brink will have plenty of scope for trick jumping and generally finding unintended quirks in maps. Remember SMART is really just an automation of the Jump and Crouch buttons to reach a destination. Manual control and timing may allow a lot of variety.

I think it was said they’d been testing a sort of bubble system similar to L4D.

They’ll have something similar to TF2, you don’t collide but you will be slightly repulsed.

(.Chris.) #6

Care to elaborate on what that entails?

(tokamak) #7

whenever you walk into someone you will be nudged out of him.

Combine this with team damage off by default and you got yourself a lot of blocked doors, that is the first thing that springs to mind here.

This was some time ago so they may have gone in another direction. I think the premise was that you’d be able to pass through your team mates but there would be some force or friction as a means of feedback.

Imagine someone standing in a doorway in real life, you can’t just walk through them but you might be able to squeeze past them. Of course in games they can allow you to clip through the player model so you don’t really have to worry about physically being able to squeeze through a gap but they’d look to maintain that kind of natural feel.

Does that make sense? I have a hangover, my brain isn’t functioning all that well.

Not at all, say you got three players blocking a door, then you can just rush right through them. But you just can’t stand inside each other.

In TF2 it works a charm.

"they turrets that one can put down aren’t anywhere near as strong as a normal player. they can be damaged very quickly (destroying takes longer, but while damaged they’re totally off line), they have no collision (or rather, they have ‘soft’ collision… you can’t stand inside one, but you can move through it easily - this is true for collision with players as well)

soft collision in brink means you don’t slow down moving through something, but if you try to stop ‘inside’ it, you get pushed out slowly." link

can you think of a possible example? (with reviving, giving health, giving ammo, planting explosives, interrogation, building turrets, + what else?)

yea map geometry where some wall is scalable only from some particular place is pretty much the only thing i can think of, and that’s pretty apparent imo. and since the horizontal speed of a jump is always the same (same as sprinting) i remember reading somewhere, things like climbing on top of something and managing to maintain your forward momentum to be able to climb something otherwise unclimbable won’t be there either. i was hoping for something like a double jump from the top of someones head to climb a higher wall faster or something.

of course how it really turns out remains to be seen, this is just guesswork based on what i’ve read, not necessarily how it will be.

OK when you said nudged away I assumed you meant you couldn’t pass them.

Well, I don’t think a weekend has gone by now for some time now where my anticipation for this game has decreased, just hope they release a demo at least.

Since I don’t know more about the game than anyone else here, all I can do is make qualified guesses. To really give a good example Rahdo would have to come here and save the day.

One thing I can list however is that you can prematurely detonate grenades by shooting them with your gun (as seen in the container city preview video). And that’s hopefully just one of a plethora of similar features.

Shooting a grenade in mid air?

EDIT: oh nvm.

Ninja’ed!

(Qhullu) #16

that’s pretty cool, i tried years to shoot a panzerfaust rocket heading my way in rtcw/et, eventually gave up and was kinda disappointed you couldn’t
