Noisy wav file?

(Flippy) #1

Hey…

I’ve got this wav file to play in my map, but it doesn’t play right…
It can be very noisy sometimes, my speakers are like… creeking (is that a word? :P)
I hear like little cracks during the sound…

When i try to play it using “/play [path]” it always plays fine!

The wav file is 16-bit, 22kHz, mono, so that should be fine no?

It’s very annoying, especially with headphones on, it’s even painfull lol…

is this a sound you made yourself? perhaps it needs some compression…
id suggest downloading some software like goldwave and check it out in there.

No, the sound is from the old UT game.
I opened it in Audacity to change it to 16 bit and exported it as wav again, just as I always did with custom wavs…

Compress it? Won’t that make it even worse?
How do i do this exactly?

when i say compression, i dont mean file size, but compression/limiting.

basicly, you take the sound, and cutoff/limit the max levels and lower levels
so it’s not overly loud in certain area’s and comes out sound even thoughout
plus it brings up the lower levels and evens it out.

so that a whisper or a scream can sound around the same level, even though
you can still tell its a whisper or a scream.

Oh, like that ^^
Ok ill see what I can do…

Just nitpicking, but “stealing” sounds is considered illegal. Be aware that some server admins might not like it.

22khz 16 bit STEREO it should be…

this program fixes any errors after that

Stereo? I was pretty sure it had to be mono…

And i got the fixwav program too… but afaik, it only helps when the sound doens’t play at all, when somethings wrong with chunksize or whatever…
My sound plays fine, just not when used in a target_speaker for some reason :stuck_out_tongue:

hmm I have a problem with my sound files now

they play when used as menu music but not in a target speaker :S
