No Server Clarification Early Damage Limitation?

(SuperWaz) #1

There’s a trend among developers lately, whereby if they get asked a question that has an answer that the community will not like, they use the “we’ll answer that nearer the launch” line. Pre-emptive damage limitation, if you like.

It’s worrying to me as a PC gamer that this is what is happening with the Brink “how do the servers work?” questions. Why not just be straight with what they intend?

Would love to talk about this, but we can’t just yet. We’ve got a few neat things planned that will soon be revealed.

This is exactly what happened with MW2 and while Splash Damage have stated that PC dedicated servers will be a part of Brink, you have to wonder what sort of part they play.

After all, if you can effectively jump into your friend’s game and Brink “removes the line between single and multiplayer gaming”, this pretty much points to one of you hosting the game.

It could use a Left4Dead type server system, that’s possible, and who knows, but we’re only a month or so away from launch - it’s about time they came clean.

I apologise in advance if this came off as harsh in any way, I just think we deserve to know. I’ve been a huge fan of everything Splash Damage has done previously, but as someone who is just dying to get their hands on a decent, competitive PC FPS, I’ve been here before, I see the worrying signs and it’s never turned out well.

As far as I am concerned and to contradict the adage, no news is definitely NOT good news.

Would love to hear some educated opinions as to how the servers MAY work, or something from the developers themselves.

Thanks in advance.

In the comments section of this article–

this issue of dedicated pc servers is raised. Badman says:

Definitely still having dedicated servers on the PC, so not sure where you got that from…

Haha, did anyone else feel like the OP had just got done listening to a Jesse Jackson speech before titling the thread?

" No server clarification early damage limitation in an attempt to avoid litigation from the PC gaming nation over their frustration?"

LOL

I think there is nothing to fear. It seems there’s going to be dedicated servers for PC.
I wish the xboxers could have the same, since WE PAY for online services. Grrrrrh… I don’t know if it´s Microsoft fault. Surely.

You do know that PC gamers have to rent those dedicated servers? Unlike console games where the developer has to pay for rent of the dedicated servers. So we are the ones paying for dedicated servers.

And the online service you pay for are the chat and friend functions of Xbox Live and the acces to the marketplace.

There’s no doubt Brink will support dedicated servers, but I have to admit I’m a bit curious myself - will there be “official” game server operators (like in etqw), or can anyone put up their own and they will all work on the same level of game network integration?

For the seamless transition from local->friend->network gameplay I assume they will be threated equally, but - would be nice to know for sure

Mmmh Sure I am wrong, but didn’t Modern Warfare 1 have dedicated servers in consoles? I though so. Maybe I don´t know what I’m talking about.

Anyways, long ago when I was a pc gamer, I didn’t pay for any dedicated server for new games, and I don’t think they were all p2p connections… So bad it’s the thing on PC world nowdays?

And the online service you pay for are the chat and friend functions of Xbox Live and the access to the marketplace.

Yeah, it’s like if they make you pay for get into a supermarket…
60 euros for that? I don’t think so. I pay because they offer a decent online service and I don’t care too much, but with that benefits they sure could invest in more dedicated servers for some games, at least for the big launches. Just my opinion.

“Anyways, long ago when I was a pc gamer, I didn’t pay for any dedicated server for new games”

yes but someone did, lots of us hire servers

(Herandar) #9

That can’t be right. You can chat, have friends and purchase from the marketplace with a free Live account. You can’t play MP with friends unless you have Gold. Also some bonus features that have nothing to do with gaming (Last.FM, Netflix, etc.)

Live account $$$s go to Microsoft. Publishers pay for dedicated console servers, which have the added bonus of shutting down whenever the publisher decides to (after one full year), and the MP mode of that game is permanently disabled.

BFBC2 still going strong with dedicated servers.

(ShoryukenII) #12

Killzone 2 is also doing fine and that was released more than two years ago.

(tokamak) #13

It’s understandable though. It’s not smart to poke the hive before the release kicks off.

(SockDog) #14

Hopefully Bethesda has deferred such descisions to SD along with SDK and Mod/Map support. I dread to think what some corporate suit and all that borrowed money would come up with as a “good solution”

Sorry, I hadn’t watched any Jesse Jackson, but that had me laughing.

That’s exactly what I am worried about. I’d hate to think Splash Damage weren’t coming forward with information because their hands were tied.

Oh, and with the games being only 8 v 8 that also points towards peer to peer being viable. Something just still doesn’t feel right to me.

Come on, Splash Damage, we gots ta know!

I think that is exactly what is happening, but maybe not to the extent that you fear.

I think the open question is whether or not they will release the server files to everyone (like ETQW); only to server providers (Bad Company 2); or only to a single server provider (Black Ops?).

My guess is this is controlled by Bethesda and they want #3 whereas SD would prefer #1, or at worst #2 and it’s not decided yet or SD hopes they can convince them #3 is a bad option for their customers.

So that’s what you have to worry about, not whether there will be dedicated servers or not, but will you have to rent a server from a single provider who doesn’t have any competition or not. That’s the part they were being vague about.

It should go without saying that everything above is pure speculation.

(15% or more) #17

Maybe they literally don’t know the answer right then.

(Herandar) #18

Yes. They aren’t going to shut down the servers of games that are still popular, that would be a PR nightmare.

You forgot Skate.Reel for Skate 1 (which of course killed Skate.Reel for Skate 3, and to the best of my knowledge it hasn’t been fixed or addressed by EA yet…)

After speaking to a few server providers (i3d and Killer Creation), they’re also in the dark despite asking for information to plan their businesses accordingly.

Both companies seem to believe that some form of Peer to Peer will be implemented, with dedicated servers only an option for private/competitive play.

They do already have some details for Battlefield 3 however.

Just keeping you up to date with what I find on my travels. Essentially, they know exactly what we do. Nada.
