No grass foliage

Not really a mod, but it’s certainly usefull for some slower servers.
On some server the grass foliage makes you lag like hell, with this file, you won’t have that problem…

Installation: Unzip the file in either your etmain or your mod directory (preferably server-sided)

Server-side / Client-side: Preferably server-sided.

Description:

File: z_nograssfoliage.pk3

Contents: empty grass foliage models to get rid of the annoying lagraising grass foliage on the Radar / Fueldump maps for Enemy Territory.

Version compatibility: Tested on ET 2.60 running etpub, but should work on all versions and mods. This pack does not require the anti foliage commands to start the servers. Normally you had to get rid of the foliage using one of the following commands:

set g_foliage 0 or set b_foliage 0 or forcecvar_foliage 0.

All of this belongs to the past when you use this model pack. You will no longer lag on the servers that have this file installed.

Great, but:

  1. The foliage doesn’t cause lag at all, at most it can slow your own computer down.
  2. If this is supposed to work client-side, it will not work on pure servers that do not have this file.
  3. I personally think that it’s much easier and more effective to use the forcecvar command.

Oh, and the name of the cvars you gave are not correct. r_drawfoliage is the right one. And you cannot set it client-side as it’s cheat protected.

Drawing empty textures instead of the foliage doesn’t help FPS at all, at least not on my computer.

Timedemo (just running around in the grass on an empty server):
Foliage enabled: 89 FPS
z_nograssfoliage.pk3: 89 FPS
r_drawfoliage 0: 125 FPS

well it does work on my own comp…
and I know I didnt metion the correct cvars tho, but you know what I meant :wink:

and besides the file is preferably used on servers… in fact it will only work if both the server and the client have the file installed so I guess its server + client side

It works but it doesn’t give the same FPS improvement that turning off the foaliage in the renderer gives you. Depending on the system it might still give some improvement.
