I don’t recall any “golden crates”. Perhaps your friends had gotten gold equipment cases? In which case, unfortunately you can’t get them as they were only available as a login reward during last year’s Christmas. Don’t worry you’re not missing much, the case only boosted your chance of getting a gold loadout by 1.8%. Remember, bronze loadouts are the best in game. Anything above is merely cosmetics.

they get given one for joining the game, if you joined earlier than a certain date (Not sure what that date is off the top of my head) you will not receive one. I didn’t get one, but it’s not a huge deal, as the only cards you can get from the cases are gold Skyhammer cards and gold Aura cards. There is no way you can get one now, unless you make a new account and play from the beginning again. Hope this answered your question!

Hello. 
Two cases are given to you upon reaching level 2.
The new operative case contains a loadout card for Skyhammer or Aura at bronze rarity or above.
The tested operative case gives you a guaranteed gold loadout card for Skyhammer or Aura.
It remains locked until you achieve level 4.
If one appears to be missing please check your filters as it might just be hiding.
