No easy-to-access Leaderboards

Please, don’t do this since you have a rank system. I hate how it shows the K/D ratio in CoD. People would play differently (camp, A LOT) and do all sorts of things other players normally wouldn’t just because their K/D ratio is on the line. They try so hard and do the dumbest/cheapest things just because they’ve seen their K/D and recognized their ability to raise it by using tactics not directly related to the game objective. Also, it’s kind of annoying when friends are like, your K/D is only XX? And stuff, people think it determines how good/bad people are, when really it doesn’t necessarily mean a thing.

Sure, you can have leaderboards on a website or something, considering half the game’s population is on a computer anyway…

Just saying, don’t include leaderboards that people can see with like 3 clicks, make them have to make some effort to get to it. Because people won’t make an effort to see their K/D, but they’ll make an effort to raise it.

…I wonder what other random/pointless little “features” this game could have…Hmm…

Info on leaderboards and stats from Richard Ham -

I’m really sensitive to the dangers of introducing things in the game that people can obsess over, to the point of ruining the game for others, and we’re very careful to identify and avoid them. For instance, global leaderboards for stuff like k/d ratios and what not: bad idea, since they disccourage players from taking chances and actually doing what’s necessary to help. So bam! Not having them. I know other games do, and they’re kind of standard, but screw it, not the right thing for Brink.

Same is true for XP. In any case where it introduces whoring behavior, it needs to change. I’ll give you an example. One of our many types of objectives (ET fans will recognize this) is the classic “take the (thing) from X to Y”. So we did have it set up such that while you’re carrying it from X to Y, you’re earning XP, because you’re doing a good job and helping your team. And it’s a nice feeling, seeing the XP accure as your rush along towards your goal. But obviously, that lead to “hmm, I think I’ll hide in a corner for awhile and let the XP rack up for awhile, and then deliver it”, which was bad. And so we changed it to the much more reasonable “you get your XP when you’ve successfully delivered it, and the faster you did so, the more you’ll earn”. So people who really want the XP are encouraged to deliver the thing as quickly as possible.

OMG, these game makers are geniuses, they know their damn MP gamers… thank goodness for that, that answered my question perfectly, it’s like they knew exactly what I was talking about… like they were reading my mind…

they read it months ago after it was discussed to death and is largely blamed as the main reason custom content didnt gather many players on quakewars and statpadders/poor sportsmanship.

good times.
