Next Round of DLC/Updates

Ask those who gave tonnes of positive feedback on Brink pre-release if they share the same opinion.

well imo i would be quite happy if they just decided to release the 2 maps we already got and make them free, and make it so they gets on ppl’s pc’s with an autoupdate.

Paying for maps ive never heard of such foolines in an fps game, lets say brink turned out good, and the had release like 5 mappacks, how in the world should the server owners decided which maps to have in rotation? ppl would be kicked on every new map, it would ofc be new ppl everytime depending on which mappack they decided to buy.

since the free delivery of those maps ended i havent had them running on our server, i got tired off seeing ppl getting kicked.

@SD listen - this is actually a good suggestion

What? They’ve been charging for maps for ages now. PC has been more resistant to the practice because there’s often a community making extra things for free, but the act of selling map packs is nothing new. Especially for a game that crosses over the platform boundries.

Didn’t quake have expansion packs? Packs that you bought? I seem to remember it did. I think even Doom had map packs but those may have been unofficial packs.

Although I agree that maps should be free to stop splitting the community, that doesn’t make the practice of selling extra maps unusual.

The difference being expansion packs usually had substantially more content than many of today’s map packs do. They’d have an add-on campaign, more than only two additional multiplayer maps, and some semblance of stand-alone appeal.

I’m not saying you’re wrong but if you’re going to make the comparisons to Doom… well Maximum Doom came with like 2000 custom player-created WADs, and this was IN ADDITION TO the 21 Doom II Master Level WADs ON ONE DISC. I’m not sure how much it cost back in the day but I’m sure there was more bang for your buck that Brink’s two maps for ten bucks or Modern Warfare 2’s 5 maps for 15 dollars (when in one case two or three of the maps were just repackaged maps from the previous installment of the series).

There was a lot less issue of community-splitting back in the day because expansion packs might have been different enough to change the multiplayer component to the point where it was like a different game, on a different master server in some cases. Those weren’t really segregating communities because you were practically playing two separate games. Call of Duty’s expansion pack United Offensive contained a new campaign and eleven multiplayer maps, probably around for the price that you’d be able to buy ten or so multiplayer maps in a newer incarnation (including maps that are just remakes of older ones).

tl;dr DLC is stupid because the amount of content that can be charged for can be completely arbitrary. I don’t mind small cosmetic microtransactions, as long as the game can be enjoyed without them. On the other hand, if you’re going to offer substantial content as DLC… make sure you give enough. And might as well bundle it up on a physical hard copy as well for people who don’t feel like downloading all that crap.

Oh: I’m not denying quantity or quality differences. I’m just pointing out that they’ve been charging for extra maps since cavemen where playing First Person Clubbing games.

I also prefer multiplayer maps to be free to prevent splitting the community. I don’t mind good DLC (The Missing Link for Deus Ex being a good example of DLC) but I also miss the good old days of proper xpacs.

I completely agree, the content should match the price or the price should match the content. With RtCW we got the GotY map pack for free, and that included 7 maps! W:ET was meant to be an expansion for RtCW but the SP didn’t work out, so they released a full MP game for free rather than charging the equivalent of a map pack today. I understand that companies need paid for their work, but not the silly prices we’re seeing today, and I refuse to believe that MW3 making £1 billion isn’t enough to cover the cost of a few more maps, especially as some are rehashed from previous titles.

Here’s an idea: with all Hollywood re-makes/re-imaginings goin on these days, howzabout a re-up of Brink…make the Brink universe the way it should have been done?

There is so much untapped potential in this IP, it shouldn’t go to waste. Being a former/semi-current fan of Brink, I’m of no silly opinion that there was no falling short here. But the nay-sayers just LIKED to see this game fail. The actual gamers were hoping for the best and got a shot of disappointment with how little content we got. Make this IP BIG! And polish it up nice and shiny!
