people who do not play frequently should be motivated to play.
Next merc is Phantom (Katana, invisibility)
Phantom cloak is bugged and sometimes makes no sound. Hurray.
In a fight between two cloaked phantoms, the one who swings and connects first probably loses. So pro.
Virtually impossible to see in some areas if you have potato cfg.
Not a viable answer…
No free FTP game should require a user to tweek their settings to see or hear a character ‘better’…
Especially when, most peeps install the game to try it, with Vanilla settings… then most likely, rage over the phantom being OP and un-install the game… and bad mouth it to friends…
this force tweek, is not a good sales strategy on SD’s part…

Players numbers haven’t changed even though everyone proclaims that everyone is uninstalling, I use vanilla low settings and can see him, I’ve played against him and in a lot of cases he puts the enemy a man down and we wipe them up as people are too busy hiding, chasing and waiting for kills. Even spent most of he night tea bagging the enemy Phantoms as they continuously tried to get the easy kills and failed. Hell one guy on our team went Phantom and accused the other team of cheating because he had heard everywhere that Phantom was ‘OP’. I told him the same thing I tell everyone… every new merc that comes out is ‘OP’ because everyone’s too bloody lazy to find a counter or just a whiney bitch… mostly whiney bitches.
Yes he does need TWEAKS, not a full make over. His cloak needs a longer cool down, more cloak interference and used up quicker when moving at speed and the cloak protection needs lowered. The thing is I’m sure the devs know this, crying like a little bitch isn’t telling them anything new… place is full of ****ing kids.
Add to this I’m not even a good player, mediocre at best.
that’s great-- I guess… Good for you ! ?
though, your response has nothing to do with my quote…
No game should require a peep to tweek their settings/config to see or hear (in this case) the phantom, ‘better’
tweeking one’s config should be ‘personal preference’ or for system stability… not, the fore-mentioned…
that was the point of my response…
Did you not read the part where I said I play on default config, no tweaking and I can see him running at me?

potato configs are used to make enemies stand out, they are outside what you can do with ingame settings, SD is going to clamp down shooter.ini. I’m not talking about Low settings, potato configs can give glowskin
I also feel like the obvious should be pointed out here… it’s a bloody cloak! The whole idea is to make him difficult to see else it goes against the point of being a cloak.
I dont recall the covery having a shield?
Plain and Simple…
Horrible character design… would make for a great character in say, Borderlands… but not a FPS MP game…
All weekend long, servers emptied one after another… When this POS OP character dominated a map…
OK, I’ve not been clear enough
Yes, Phantom is OP and the shield is probably really overboard.
What I’m afraid of, is seeing comments stating the simple fact there is an invisible guy in the game (just an invisible guy, as a concept, not phantom in its current incarnation, so not an invisible+shielded+easy melee instagib+best SMG guy, just plain invisible and that’s all) is destroying the game concept.
I did, just 90% of it had nothing to do with settings
I use default settings - and I see him running at me as well… not so much when he’s hiding in a corner or perfectly still somewhere…
And thats the problem, character takes away from the Run and Gun FPS MP concept… He has no place in this type of fast paced game (imo)
the covey in ETQW had a weakness… you just pointed your cross hairs over him, if the players name didnt appear, FIRE!
the phantom has no such weakness while cloaked… yes, your crosshairs will go red, I know… but its not the same due to his cloak and ability to quickly hide around a corner etc, O and fing shield…

I beg to differ, his place is perfectly fine, and we also played with him for a long time before you got your hands on him. Here’s the cold hard truth you need to face… he’s not going away so you can get over that one straight away. People already know how to counter him, it’s called ‘learning’, if you spent more time doing it and less time whining about him on forums then you’ll have come to the same realisation as a lot of others… Phantom ain’t all that. Blaming the game for your mediocre skill is just sad.
I predict a nerf, then a predict a ton of threads on how Phantom is now useless because people had already figured out how to beat him when he was “OP”, and now he’s nerfed he’ll be pretty much canon fodder… wait and see.
Since you decided to take this on a personal level, which shows your maturity…
I’ll end this with you, on:
The one thing you keep forgetting, its a FTP game… SD is purely reliant on consistent ‘donations’ (i say donations, because you are not buying a ‘loadout’ you dont own it etc) from the community to keep this game alive, long term…
Continue to introduce mercs into the game, such has the phantom, those ‘donations’ will quickly disappear. People will see it as a cash grab until its nerfed, which will kill the game…
Your opinion doesn’t matter, nor does mine… What does matter is, a large number of peeps have complained and SD needs to take note, if they want their game to survive.
So you know the character has changed a lot over time because he always had problems.
I want a character like phantom in the game to flank and bypass choke points but the current iteration is, in my opinion, still deeply flawed. There isn’t enough skill involved in using him, as I noted previously, and the motion sensor counter that 100% negates the ability in a radius isn’t how a counter system should be implemented in a game with pay/time locked characters and limited player choice of characters while in-game.

We had this discussion a while ago on IRC, and my view always was that Phantom was the E-Honda of DB. On the surface a devastating merc causing chaos while being relatively simple for new players use, but the further up the skill chain you go the more you realise that he is in fact a one trick wonder where people with a little knowledge can counter him easily, and that’s started to happen after just over a week of being released. He hasn’t changed THAT much, in fact he’s had a shield added to his cloak and that’s about the only big obvious change. Adding unique new mercs then asking for simple ways to counter does nothing but stunt skill growth, I’d rather be tested and forced to adapt which in turn betters me as a player than have SD implement an easy counter so’s not to hurt peoples little feelings.
Did you play with him? The best way to play as Phantom is to bypass the enemy and flank the enemy. When you try to rush head-on it is just a matter of seconds until you are dead. The players slowly adapt to the new merc and so he gets “balanced” by himself.
The only Thing I ant to change is the cooldown, maybe increase the cooldown to 10 secs instead of 6 secs for a full refill of the ability.
Yes, as I noted previously, I played him a lot. When I rush head-on, I have the advantage of having time to react, line up my aim and get the first headshot because I break the shield when I fire. That and the chainsaw katana means phantom can cheese up firefights without using a lot of skill and that’s what I do not like.
Again, the shield should drop when Phantom switchs to Kek/katana rather than when he fires.
…and I definitely think he needs the shield. The addition’s huge but it is necessary. It’s the mechanics of when it drops that make it cheesy.
I’d rather be tested and forced to adapt which in turn betters me as a player than have SD implement an easy counter so’s not to hurt peoples little feelings.
I agree. The heartbeat sensor counter completely nullifies the ability in a radius. There should not be hard counters like that in a game with pay/time locked characters and limited player choice of characters while in-game.
The HB isn’t that great anyway. It gets shot, blown up, or takes an odd bounce and lands in a bad spot. Anyway, the spots people would ordinarily throw at for sniping aren’t necessarily spots a Phantom player will care about or have any effect on. So what are people going to do? Stack their team with Vassili? Even one extra sniper can ruin the balance of the team.
So I have been killing quiet a lot of phantoms recently! I have found a weakness for 80% of the phantoms played, because they aren’t great players or new to the class!
When you see or hear a phantom, run in the opposite direction. The thing with Phantoms is, they will always chase you, then without realising their shield has run out, that’s when you turn and you fire. What you will notice is, they panic because they don’t have that invisibility anymore. they even try to run away and re shield hahaha!
Keep them at a distance and they’re just like any other merc!
