Newbie Question on Map Design

(Klaranth) #1

Hi, all,

Got some great ideas for making new maps. Got Radiant installed, and going through the manual: http://www.qeradiant.com/manual/Q3Rad_Manual/index.htm

Noticing the sheer amount of varieties of Goldrush already in existance, I wondered how I could get one of them, preferably the original one, imported into Radiant, to learn from the masters.

Anyone can tell me how to do that? Is there a place that got the .map files of the original maps?

Thanks in advance for helping another noob on map making.

goldrush comes with radiant ffs

And unless a mapper isn’t releasing the .map of his map, no you can’t get the source files.

The amount of goldrush versions is just a sad development due to tons of wannabe mappers being too lazy or just not capable to create their own, original map and no path to follow imo.

Goldrush is shipped with Radiant.
So if you have Radiant installed Goldrush is too.
Try just to open a map in Radiant.
May be path is correct.
Normally it should be the installation path of enemy territory and the subfolder maps.

Thanks. Just found goldrush.map [sheepish look]

So, there is no chance of finding railgun.map or oasis.map anywhere?

And I am not that lazy to do another Goldrush map. I want to see if my own ideas are possible to build into a map, first.

So, basically, there is no way or program to reverse engineer a .pk3 file into a .map file?

Actually there is a way to reverse engineer bsp files to map files (not exactly - some information will be lost).

pk3 files are renamed zip files that can be opened with archive programs that are able to read zip files.

like EB says its posible although reverse engineering is often done by inexperienced mappers and it takes a fairly skilled and exerienced mapper to repair all the damage that reverse compiling does

if you are new to mapping then may i surgest taking a little step back and working on a few more simple maps. Goldrush is a great referance when you want to see how the profesionals do things but the complexity of the map makes it a very bad idea to start learnign by modiflying this map

The map “Loffy’s CTF Prefab 2” has the .map file in it.

This map has two purposes: First, it is a fully functional ctf-style map for 6 vs. 6 matches. Secondly, the map comes complete with all files (incl. the .map-file) for other mappers to use. (Hence the name “prefab”.)

Sadly enough the ideas I have seem far from simple.

I have no intention to redo any Goldrush. IMO there are too many Goldrush variations already.
I have other plans and thoughts, and I just wanted to see how things look in Radiant …
