I’m afraid these forums cannot really cater towards people who are looking for basic mapping information. Its simply a time and resources thing which I don’t have and unless any regulars help you will get frustrated waiting for responses to your questions.

As Mlehliw said the tutorials over at the surface site are a very good starting point and there is also the forums at tramdesign and jolt which have a very good friendly bunch of regulars who could help you.
