Learn to make a map first. I wonder if anyone has the time to have an apprentice, but you’ll probably have to learn it by yourself.
2Bit’s tutorials should get you started on most stuff.
As for “plain C”, it’s actually C. I still advise to learn a little bit of basic C++ first, the basics are nearly similar and it is far easier to get your first program written. A book I’ve read before is Thinking in C++ 2nd Edition, it is available online for free. The only thing you have to cope with is that it’s an HTML book. If you want it in PDF, search on Google.
