New players need 1 of each type of merc

(watsyurdeal) #1

Right now, new folks have a Support, and a Medic, but they really need a Engineer, Assault, and Recon as well.

I know a lot of people will be against this, but I think the starting Mercs should be Skyhammer, Aura, Proxy, Vasilli, and Fragger.

This should be more than enough to get people’s feet wet, and allow them enough versatility to not be entirely useless. Because the biggest problem I have with beginner players is that they only have so many mercs available to use. A whole of lot of good a team full of Skyhammers does when we really need some Proxies or Fraggers.

I definitely think an engineer/objective specialist should be a free merc. I knew tons of players in ET who weren’t the greatest aimers but loved to always get the objective done. We should allow that option for new dirty bombers also.

While I can completely agree that new players need access to an engineer, I feel like also giving Fragger and Vasilli a step too far. There are already TONS of players buying vasilli with their first 30k and we already see too many of them in pubs

Fragger is also a very strong merc. I could see him be free, but I also think that none of the ultra killy classes should be free to players. (and by killy I mean classes that pretty much are ONLY there for kills) It is just another distraction that pulls new players away from learning how to support the team and play objectives.

I’d wager that once the game gets a few more mercs in and there are a ton to get that SD will offer a couple more free mercs. It’s not only good PR but it will help the game for little loss. They can then change the starter pack or w/e it’s called now to include newer mercs.

(watsyurdeal) #5

Well to be honest there’s not much you could do about that, you can’t change people’s mindset.

They’ll have to figure out for themselves why their team constantly loses, and they’ll eventually put 2 and 2 together and realize that they need to pull their weight. Throw out those motion sensors, play Proxy and go for the plants or defuses, play Medic and revive people, they’ll eventually figure it out if they want to progress in the game at all.

But restricting them to just Skyhammer and Aura is also just as detrimental to team composition as it limits your team’s ability to adapt. That guy playing Skyhammer might realize Proxies mines or Fragger nades would be more useful in doors or on defense when the EV is done getting escorted to the end.

lol, everyone whines they want a free engi and still buy Fragger or Vassili as their first merc

There’s a big difference between what is necessary to play right and what people use to fancy. People beg for an engineer because after a couple of hours, you can only but notice that an engineer is imperative to enjoy the full game. To me, only having aura and skyhammer as 100% mercs always appeared to me a non-sense.
Of course, I’d start now with absolute no knowledge of the game, I’d definitely not buy proxo/bushwacker/fletcher as a first paid merc. Those 3 clearly does not look sexy in terms of doing frags and having fun when you start the game…
Don’t forget that low levels have plenty of credits rewards until level 5, and coupled by the credits rate being nicely increased since last patch, quite a good numbers of players might just had enough cash to buy some random merc without having all the necessary game understanding keys a.k.a. “buy a engineer asap” coming into their eyes. And after that, they have a full 30k grind to do (with no 20k+ bonus) to unlock proxy. 4 days of what always appeared to me as playing with 2/3 of the game available.

I bought the merc pack and I would like to see an engineer be part of the free mercs. Getting into games where neither side has an engineer is just painful and it happens constantly if an engineer isn’t in the rotation. It would benefit server play quite a bit overall IMO and expose people to how fun the engineer can be in this game compared to others without having to potentially sacrifice hard earned credits or money to try one out (if there isn’t one on rotation). It just makes sense to me.

Same reason I always have an engi with me no matter what. Actually, we were doing a 5 man premade in ranked and the entire enemy team had no engineer(solos) between the 5 of them. It was terminal. To put it simply, they lost.

Fingers on bomb’s touchscreen is always a dreadful vision.

(Omega_K2) #12

I think they only need an engineer because this game is esssentially objective focused and most of them require an engineer to be efficent. Pretty much all of the maps have one or multiple stages where engineers can help.

(Fleshpound) #13

I think that new players needs one of the objective specialist.

If i had that power to choose one of them then my choice would be between Bushwhacker and Proxy.

(LifeupOmega) #14

An engineer always on rotation or one given at the start just like Sky and Aura is the way to go.

(GregHouseMD) #15

Engineers are necessary. I don’t see Assault or Recon mercs being essential in the same way, though. I mean, you can win without a Fragger in your team. Without an engineer, it gets trickier. Nothing like taking the entire CD of Airstrike to repair the EV.

(Ghosthree3) #16

I kind of feel Proxy should have been free too to complete the trinity. As much as it pains me to say it because I really hate playing against Proxys…

(watsyurdeal) #17

So then nobody objects to a free Proxy?

Alright Splash you heard em, make Proxy free so we have 3 mercs to start out with. Huzzah!

And at the same time refund the credits people used to buy her with, remove her from the ultimate pack and replace her with Fletcher(The pack would become VERY worth buying if you did this) to get Fletcher more in game face time(Bushwacker is currently quite a bit more popular then Fletcher). And of course give Fletcher to anybody who bought the Ultimate Starter Pack.

I would like to see that happen, but likely? Probably not.

EDIT: Oh! And just give 30k Credits to the people who bought the original merc starter pack as well.
