New merc idea

All rights go to SD for character implementation. This is a WIP and my meager effort to #MakeDBGreatAgain :smiley:

Operator Tag: Hassan
Origin: USA/Afghanistan

CIA/CDCC trained Afghan migrant for CNBC detection from the Iraq WMD campaign in the late 90s, he’s in for some money on the side at London post Container War.

Designation: RECON class merc (like Redeye & Phantom)
Model: Very simplistic polygonal model, however medium on texture.
Primary: ?
Secondary: Empire-9, MP400 or Coulden
Melee: Kukri, Beckhil or ?(default)
Ability: Can pick up and acquire primary weapon of enemy he gibs with melee weapon (Caveat: cannot resupply primary weapon with ammo crate, ammo stations or dropped ammo; only secondary weapon is re-suppliable); 30 second cool down
Knife throw: Very strong ranged melee attack that works with Chopper augment (intended to One-Shot-Kill all squishy type mercs)
Health: 110
Speed: To be Announced

So a looter type character that has to acquire a primary in battle every life and a one shot ability (for light mercs)

ok so flaws i can pick out

  1. Having this merc need to acquire a primary puts him at a stupid disadvantage.
  2. This also requires the player to rely on their team too much to get to the point where he can help the team with some decent firepower.
  3. Whilst I like the idea of constantly changing weapons since the merc cannot acquire ammo how does ammo from picked up weapons work? Do they only get a full magazine/clip from them or however much ammo they had when they are looted. All that on top of only being able to do it every 30sec…
  4. ranged melee attack…
  5. throwing knives were already a thing in closed beta and were taken out because they didnt fit the gameplay style SD were going for.
  6. There are already a million 1 shot kills for the squishies already, we dont need them being even more worse off.

and last but most importantly

  1. Wrong thread mate this should be in the idea submission style thread not current merc discussion

That actually feels somewhat interesting, but IMO you should give him another ability than the knife throw to allow him to give some utility to his team. I feel like that guy suffers from the pre-buff Phantom syndrome.

Also, replace Caulden by Tolen MP. I don’t think that Caulden loadouts would ever be used. It’s easier to score a kill with a machine pistol than a semi auto pistol IMO, so very few people will actually dare to use the Caulden.

1.) Early in the game (post closed beta, early open beta) Fletcher players with the Anhuld were using the secondary weapon (Empire-9) as primary due to the Anhuld being such a bad performing shotgun. Players who use Sparks almost always opted for the Empire-9 or MP400 because of the hit box issue with the REVIV-R. The point of this recon class merc is variability and yes, at the spawning, he is disadvantaged but it’s not for the potato or scrub type of player in DB. The gameplay design of this merc is catering more to the early adaptors of the game.

2.) Team interdependence is part DB’s doctrine; just as everyone needs support from ammo suppliers and medics. Remember, it is a game mechanic that he must gib an enemy with a melee weapon to take his primary so if someone else gibs it then, he won’t be able to get the player’s primary weapon. Also, the objective container can OSK certain mercs; how do you define decent firepower? MOA damage with Hochfir cyclic rate and recoil? All weapons in DB are decent and only the less experienced players differentiate because of their narrow play style. How does recon and sniper class support the team? Well, I’m stil getting creative with this one. Watch this space.

3.) What I had in mind is that the merc only gets whatever is in the magazine and the remaining clips. Severely disadvantaged? Maybe so, but this is the design stage and this is where the merc sandbox allows devs to do things. It is conflicting however that he cannot resupply weapon ammo, but his secondary is fixed, so I think the only weapon that can be re supplied is the secondary weapon.

4.) And powerful too!!! Katana will no longer be the longest ranged melee weapon.

5.) It’s in the game and it’s only a matter of creativity to make good use of it amd make it fit the gameplay of DB. Wouldn’t it be awesome if players just kept falling not knowing what was hitting them? Silently gibbed from afar FTW.

6.) A million one-shot-kills to kill a Sparks, Aura, Aimee or Proxy? That must be a very well suppoted merc you’re shooting with Rhino’s minigun… or the cancer of merc rotation is just is too much. Like I said, not for potatoes or scrubs. I’ve seen players tank with an Aura using Remburg against Rhino, Fragger or Thunder, so situationally, Aura has infinite health. The only true squishy merc are Aimee and Proxy because of their dependence on health regen.

7.) I admit, but it’s a subtle way of attracting mods isn’t it :stuck_out_tongue:

If you got great ideas for the merc (and not overpower the class such that it breaks DB), please feel free to pitch in. It’ll be awesome to have a community designed merc in the game.

Those exactly are my second thoughts. Perhaps enemy trails to show where the enemy was and their direction of movement? He is after all, CDCC trained to detect stuff.

Following the game designs’ ā€œjokerā€ philosophy, the Coulden is there for balancing. Expect the best augments if and when you get this secondary so the merc doesn’t become all too powerful.

@K1X455 I dunno mate the merc just feels gimmicky for the sake of being gimmicky to me. He has no clear role for the team imo. Hes a recon and doesn’t spot people and doesn’t have an ability that gives him an edge, only brings him up to par. I do like the idea of constantly swapping weapons that seems like he would be interesting to play, interesting but not practical imo

I have 2 or 3 merc concepts already ( In the correct discussion area :wink: ) If i remember correctly the first was a merc that had a deployable mg, second was a kind of psycodelic gas grenade merc and the last was a medic who leeched life. Obviously the actual mercs are a tad more in depth in their respective threads but im not going to take the spotlight away here, if you are keen on destroying my ideas then go for it. You should be able to find them quickly through my profile I don’t think I’ve started too many threads so you should be able to find them swiftly.

Gimmicky for the sake of being gimmicky? You really don’t know but you expressed your opinion as if I was stealing or depriving you of your deployable turret, psycodelic gas grenade or medic leaching life… did you mean a shooting Aura, Phoenix, Sparks or Sawbonez that heals himself? Did you get to read on what I said to Eox? And does Phantom spot like Aimee or Vasilli? And I honestly haven’t read any of the mercs you have proposed. Are they gameplay balanced?

Please link your mercs, I gtg as I don’t have much time anymore to search.

Sorry if my post came off like that i misread the last line of your last comment. I hate that they gave phantom the emp over a spotting ability hes a recon dammit, wheres the spotter? XD The way I read that last sentence went more along the lines of ā€œIf you got great ideas for A merc (and not overpower the class such that it breaks DB), please feel free to pitch in. It’ll be awesome to have a community designed merc in the game.ā€ Since im a dumbass i buggered one word and this miscommunication landslide occured. My bad. I’ll chuck you some links momentarily. What I meant in mine by ā€œdestroyingā€ my ideas was for you to pick them apart in a similar way that I had done for yours. Sorry for the miscommunication friend.
